Vehicle pileup closes I-80 for 18 hours

Wyoming Highway Patrol Troopers are still attempting to identify how many vehicles were involved in a pileup around 2 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 80 seven miles east of Elk Mountain.

The crash was reported just before 2 p.m., Stephen Townsend with the Wyoming Highway Patrol reported in a press release Monday.

Interstate 80 was closed for about 18 hours and the pileup involved at least 47 vehicles, Townsend reported. The actual vehicle count may go up as the investigation progresses.

The pileup occurred after speeds had been reduced to 45 miles per hour during snowy, windy and icy conditions. The wind and snow caused limited visibility.

Five crash victims were transported to Memorial Hospital of Carbon County in Rawlins. Two crash victims were transported to Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie. One of the victims transported to Laramie was transferred to a hospital in Fort Collins, Colo., because of the serious injuries.

Two of the crash victims in a Subaru vehicle were trapped for approximately two hours as the Wyoming Highway Patrol Troopers and first responders attempted to extricate them from their vehicle, which was crushed between two tractor trailer vehicles.

Troopers investigating this crash said speed too fast for existing conditions by motorists was a contributing factor that led up to so many vehicles being involved.

Townsend reported Troopers across the state of Wyoming were working on crashes Monday morning as roadways were slick-to-slick in spots. Motorists are reminded to obey variable speed signs and drive with care.
