With hopes of bringing more recreational activities to Rick Martin Memorial Park, the Riverside Town Council discussed adding a disc golf course at last Thursday’s meeting.
To get a better feel for how a disc golf course works, council member Karran Bedwell said she studied different courses in the surrounding area.
“I did research on the disc golf, and Washington Park in Rawlins has a disc course,” she said. “They have nine baskets and nine tees, and the one in Craig has six. I think there’s 18 in the state of Wyoming.”
The council discussed possibly setting up a money donation box at Rick Martin Memorial Park, for people who go there to play a course at the park. Bedwell said she heard of a donation box for other courses, and went over the course dimensions she had in mind.
“I did some projections, and from the tee to the basket it should be between 3 and 500 feet,” she said. “People will also have to use their own discs, unless we wanted to get discs with our imprints on them for the town. There are enough hills and trees there, so it could be quite a challenging course if it’s laid out right.”
Bedwell said the tees and baskets with posts placed into the ground would be permanently set for all of each year, and not removed during wintertime.
Bedwell said the baskets are around $369 each, and recommended six baskets for the park. The council discussed possibly involving the Fifth Penny Tax as a way to help make the course a reality.
“I think that’s something that we could use the Fifth Penny Tax for,” said council member Margaret Weber.
Council members decided to wait on making any motions to move forward with the project.
The next Riverside Town Council meeting is at 6 p.m., April 10 at the Riverside Town Hall.
