Residents have fun with St. Patrick's Day

At Deseret Health and Rehab, residents enjoyed many activities throughout the week. The Activity Department offers a wide variety of activities each week to meet the residents’ interests, as well as the physical, mental and psychological well-being of each resident.

With the arrival of St. Patrick’s Day, Thursday morning saw three residents making little leprechaun hats. They heard about “kissing the blarney stone” and getting “the gift of gab.”

With television in nearly every resident’s room, residents get to hear local, national, and international news. As a result, even residents are talking about the disappearance of the Boeing 777 jetliner in Malaysia six days ago with its 239 passengers. With all the conspiracy theories floating around, my favorite one is that the Starship Enterprise did time travel from the 24th century with Scottie beaming the airplane aboard, and then the Enterprise warped back to its own century to complete a secret mission. Maybe, yours truly has the “gift of gab.”

Games throughout the week provided fun and laughter. On Sunday afternoon, three residents played Dominoes with Charlotte Gibbons winning winning. On Tuesday morning, four residents elected to play Yahtzee with Dora Martin winning. On Wednesday afternoon, 10 residents played Bingo, and on Friday afternoon, 12 residents played Bingo. Edith Donnis, Dora Martin, and Kenny Hoagland won Four Corners. Edith Donnis, Dora Martin, and Truth Karstoft won Blackouts. Our Bingo helpers were Lila Worden, Joy Hamilton, Dawna Erickson, Loretta Loose, Elder Alameda, Elder Ramirez, and Gloria Rakness, with Gloria Rakness calling on Wednesday.

During the evenings throughout the week, residents watched the Turner Classic Movie channel with its commercial-free movies. On Sunday morning, residents watched the VCR movie, Rooster Cogburn. On Tuesday afternoon, five residents watched the VCR movie, Forever Young. On Saturday morning, residents watched the VCR movie, Key Largo.

For Lunch Out at the Saratoga Senior Center, on Monday four residents had spaghetti with meat sauce, and on Friday, four residents had baked fish.

On Sunday afternoon, Pastor Gene Smith of the Platte Valley Christian Center led our church service with Doris Davis assisting on the keyboard.

On Monday morning, eight residents attended Resident Council under the leadership of President Randy Cross.

On Wednesday morning, Lynda Healey, Merlynn Hoopes, Pat Steumke, and Georgia Schroer gave Hair Care to eight ladies and Nail Care to six of them.
