Editor,
I just wanted to say thank you to the Saratoga Sun, for publishing the findings from the Town of Saratoga’s audit. The audit has always been available for public inspection but we have never published it in the paper.
In the last nine years there has never been a request for a copy of the audit. After the allegations of misappropriation of funds and the covering up of the same, I wasn’t surprised to have two people come in and request a copy of it.
I support those people that do this if done with the right intentions. However, it appears that one copy was shared with the Saratoga Sun. The second copy was shared with a former Saratoga Clerk\Treasurer asking for an opinion on Saratoga’s audit. This makes me question what their true intentions were when getting copies of the audit.
The audit does show four significant deficiencies. However, when the auditor presented the findings at the February eighteenth meeting, he told the council that although they are considered significant they aren’t serious. In fact, he said that smaller municipalities have the same issues come up in the audits annually.
In researching past Town of Saratoga Audits, I found that, randomly, in the years 1996, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2010, 2011 and 2012, each audit showed that there were issues that were listed under Significant Deficiencies in Internal Control.
