Chariot races head to the gate for year 34

One of the earliest forms of racing is ready to return to Saratoga for a 34th year. The Donald E. Erickson Chariot Races headed to the starting gate in a little over a week.

The annual event, put on by the Saratoga Lions Club will begin Valentine’s Day, at 8 p.m. at the Hotel Wolf with Calcutta betting. Each chariot team will be auctioned to the highest bidder and proceeds from that event will benefit the Lions Club.

Races will begin the next day at 1 p.m. at the Buck Springs Arena, located northeast of Saratoga. These races will feature Chariot teams from all over the region who will compete in a quarter-mile track. Two chariots at a time will go head-to-head. Awards are given for each of the individual races and the overall fastest time.

On Feb. 16, there will be a prime rib banquet at the Platte Valley Community Center. The dinner will start with a happy hour at 6 p.m. The dinner is open to the general public and racers alike, and will be catered by the Hotel Wolf. Tickets for the dinner are $20 and can be purchased at the door.

Come out and enjoy the Chariot Races and the attending festivities on Feb. 14, 15 and 16.
