Despite slower times than what was seen at their first meet, the Saratoga High School cross-country runners still gave an honest effort at Friday’s Rawlins Invitational.
The meet took place at the Sinclair Golf Course and boasted one top 10 placement from Saratoga’s team.
Top 20 placers included Katie Loose in the varsity girls race (14th place, 23:23), Cameron Collamer in the varsity boys race (16th place, 19:58) and Cruz Escobedo in the JV girls race (16th place, 32:10).
Coach Rex Hohnholt said last week was a hard warm-up week for training the kids to see where their performance levels were.
“We worked awful hard this week and knew our times would be slower this week,” Hohnholt said.
Hohnholt said the heat during practices and the meet at Sinclair were also factors in producing slower runs.
“The heat was unbearable this week, and it took a lot of effort out of them,” he said. “Four days of running in hot weather at practice was hard on them. The heat at the race was probably the hottest race we’ve been in, and I’ve been doing this for 10 years. You’ll usually get a breeze that will cool things down in September, but it was just hot out there.”
Even with decrease in times, Hohnholt said he was happy with all his runner performances, and is now focused on what they can do at this weekend’s Liberty Bell Invite in Colorado.
“I’m not concerned about anybody’s effort because the effort was there, and I know what they’re capable of doing,” he said. “We’ll be just fine. You have to go down there and get a good showing at Liberty Bell if you want to go back.”
Out of the 10 kids who participated, Hohnholt said Katie Loose and Jeremy Detterer performed well.
“Everybody performed about where I thought they would be, with the exception of Katie, who just had a great run and is getting more comfortable,” he said. “She’s progressing as the week goes on, and I’d say she probably had the most exceptional race. Jeremy is also a dominant kid with a lot of talent, and he’s starting to realize that he doesn’t need to wait back and wait for people. He can take control of a race and really punish people.”
The cross-country team’s next meet, the Liberty Bell Invite, is this Friday in Littleton, Colo.
