Hello, new teachers

Editor’s note: The Saratoga Sun interviewed new teachers in Carbon County School District No. 2 to introduce them to the community. These are some of the new teachers.

Alli Calvert

Alli Calvert is beginning her science teaching career at HEM Junior/Senior High School.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to teach at HEM, and I hope to make an impact in students’ lives,” she said.

Calvert has lived in Saratoga for the past two years, and previously worked for Carbon County School District No. 2 as the Saratoga Elementary School Friday Enrichment Coordinator. This year, Calvert will teach biology and chemistry to high school students at HEM.

“This is my first year teaching full-time,” Calvert said. “I am looking forward to being in a high school setting.”

Calvert said she likes connecting science to real-world situations.

“I have been interested in science since high school, but it wasn’t until college that I decided to teach,” she said.

Calvert graduated from West Texas A&M University in 2004 with a degree in math, science and education. In 2009, she went back for a Wyoming teaching certificate in biology and Master’s Degree in Science Education from Western Governors University, which she completed in 2012.

Calvert came to Carbon County with her husband. Calvert has three children.

Nilia McCann

A preschool student inspired Nilia McCann to get back into teaching, leading her to Elk Mountain.

“I felt so fortunate that Elk Mountain offered me this position,” McCann said.

Originally from South Dakota, McCann moved to Cheyenne four years ago to be closer to her grandchildren. McCann said one was old enough to go into preschool.

“I had been taking care of my grandchildren while they were young. Since the youngest was old enough to go to preschool, I decided that I would like to come back to teaching,” McCann said.

McCann has 25 years of teaching experience, mostly with fifth and sixth graders. McCann will teach fourth, fifth and sixth grade at Elk Mountain Elementary School this year.

This will be McCann’s first year teaching in Wyoming.

I am looking forward to the challenge of helping all of my students grow as much as they can this year,” she said.

McCann said her mother inspired her to become a teacher.

“My mother taught for many years in a country school that had all eight grades. She always enjoyed her work so much, so I decided that I wanted to be a teacher, too,” she said.

McCann said she likes Wyoming, and enjoys hiking, camping, fishing, hunting and cross-country skiing.

McCann’s husband works for the Wyoming Community College Commission. The couple has three married children and seven grandchildren.

Emily Phillips

Emily Phillips is beginning her new teaching career at HEM Junior/Senior High School.

“This is my first time teaching,” she said.

Phillips will be teaching secondary math at HEM.

“I am looking forward to working with the staff at HEM, teaching new students and learning from the CCSD 2 team,” she said.

Phillips said she appreciates the opportunity to work at HEM because it’s an opportunity for her to learn as well, and she wanted to teach at a Wyoming school.

“I think the best part of teaching is the opportunity to continue learning,” she said.

Phillips enjoys the outdoors, reading, doing arts and crafts and sports.
