The Saratoga Historical and Cultural Association is hosting its annual trek beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, meeting at the Saratoga Museum.
This year’s trek will cover the Overland Trail and Emigrant’s Crossing.
Bob Randall, Elva Evans and Chris Rollison will be the guest speakers of the trek and will share their research of the Overland Trail, the graves near Emigrant’s Crossing and the attack on Kit Carson by Indians.
Tour guides will also read accounts from people who traveled with one of the wagon trains from Gay Day Alcorn’s book “Tough Country”.
People on the trek will receive a booklet with photos and the history of the Overland Trail, Emigrant’s Crossing and Cemetery, authored by Dick Perue.
Trekkers are encouraged to car pool in high profile vehicles, bring walking sticks and wear boots and appropriate clothing, as it is rattlesnake country. For those staying for the question and answer session, bring lunch and a lawn chair.
Because of high temperatures and dusty conditions, trekkers should also bring plenty of water and wear a hat.
Several points of interest will be seen along the trek including the Emigrant Cemetery, a child’s grave, names carved in a cliff by the travelers in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and a rock staircase. Other sites include Coal Banks and Cathedral Rocks, Johnston (pronounced Johnstone) Island and Bridger’s Pass.
