Serving the Platte Valley since 1888

On June 18 I was invited to attend the first semi-public performance of the Elk Mountain Community Youth Choir. This was the group’s second performance. The first was attended by the parents. Dawn Kenneda, director, explained that this was her way to expose the youth to public performance in steps so as not to overwhelm them.
Dawn has lived in Elk Mountain for three years, with her husband Ryan and two daughters Ellen and Morgan. Dawn has a bachelor’s degree in music, music education K-12, general, band and choral with a major focus in vocal performance and choral conducting, and has a passion for music. She has taught both private and in the public schools over the past 12 years. Dawn leads worship every Sunday at the Elk Mountain Community Church with the help of her daughters. The youth choir practice every Friday, with a few traveling from the surrounding areas to join.
As an audience member I was quite impressed by the group. They did well transitioning from one performance to the next. It was evident the practice had paid off as all members were confident in their performance. There were many solos that complimented the harmony of the group. Additionally, instruments such as the harp, flute, guitar, and violin were presented. Dawn expertly accompanied the singers with the ukulele and the piano. The performance lasted about an hour that quickly slipped by due to the engaging entertainment. When asked about the pleasant song selection, Dawn stated she picks songs that will encourage her members who sing them.
As the mayor I am thrilled to have this new group thrive in our community. I thank Dawn for having the vision and the tenacity to organize this group and help our children succeed. I am also thankful that this group is inclusive of our entire Valley community. We have been striving to involve our surrounding neighbors and make them feel a welcome part of our town. We hope that the sense of community has nothing to do with town limits. I encourage anyone to make time to see this talented group perform.
Town of Elk Mountain Mayor, Morgan Irene
