A woman visiting a family-owned cabin near Encampment was killed in an ATV wreck Monday night.
Stacey Houk, 27, of Torrington, was driving a 2010 Polaris Sportsman 550 ATV with a passenger, Tabatha McCoy, 31, also of Torrington on private property approximately 11 miles west of Encampment when Houk lost control of the vehicle.
Houk lost control of the ATV after coming to a sharp left turn, said Wyoming Highway Patrol Lt. Kelly Finn. The ATV slid out of control and rolled over.
Finn said he estimated the wreck occurred around 8:45 p.m., but was hard to determine, he said.
Because of the rural area, Wyoming Highwway Patrol did not get the call until later. Finn said an EMS crew did not arrive at the scene until about an hour after the call due to difficulty finding the wreck site. “It took a while for us to verify where the crash had occurred,” Finn said.
The EMS crew pronounced Houk dead at the scene. McCoy was transported to Memorial Hospital of Carbon County in Rawlins by ambulance.
Finn said the involvement of alcohol is still being investigated.
Both women were visiting a family-owned cabin for a long weekend, Finn said.
Finn said fatal ATV wrecks in Wyoming are a rare occurrence.
