Cow Pie Open brings out statewide golfers

Nearly 100 golfers from all over Wyoming participated at the 18th annual Cow Pie Open Golf Classic tournament in Encampment June 1.

The Platte Valley one-of-a-kind tourney was a blind draw and took place in a cow pasture, complete with buckets in the ground serving as holes. Chad McKinney, of Cheyenne, and Garrett Wells, of Rawlins, scored first place with a combined score of 83, and the two players each received a prize of $200.

In second place, there was a tie between Jerry DePoister, of Rock Springs, and Chad Fillweber, of Encampment, (who received combined score of 90), and Heath Cline, of Encampment, and Gene Smith, of Laramie, (who also received a combined score of 90). The four players received $125 each.

Wells was the closest to the pin on Hole No. 1 with a distance of 21’1”, and Josh Rauterkus, of Casper, was the closest to the pin on Hole No. 3 with a distance of 23’6”. Low scorers were DePoister and Mandy Moon, of Saratoga, who each received a score of 32.

Unfortunately, no golfer was able to achieve the prized $500 hole-in-one hole.

A total of 98 statewide golfers participated and $2,400 was raised, with proceeds going toward the Saratoga/Encampment USA Wrestling program.

Several placers also donated some or all of their money back to the wrestling program.
