Obituary: Mary Louise Vyvey

Mary Louise Vyvey passed away June 5, 2013 at Deseret Health Care in Saratoga at the age of 94.

Mary was born Aug. 8, 1918 in Craig, Colo., the daughter of Leo and Eliza Hilewaert.

She graduated from Mt. Gertrude’s Academy in May 1936.  On May 10, 1938 she married John L. Vyvey and moved to the Platte Valley where they lived and worked on many ranches.  They made Saratoga their permanent home in 1960.

Mary was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and past member of the Saratoga Homemakers Club.

Mary enjoyed crocheting, knitting and also made clothes for herself and her family.  She was known for her yard of flowers.

She made jellies and jams and canned fruits and vegetables, many from her own garden.  She entered many items in the county fair and won several awards for her work.

Mary is survived by her son Larry (Caroline) Vyvey, grandsons, Patrick (Amy) Dillon and Geoffrey Dillon, granddaughters Trudy (Randy) Bernatow and Pamela (John) Hornbeck,  six grandchildren, a great, great-grandson, and numerous other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John Vyvey, daughter Marilyn Dillon and brothers Alfonso, Frank, Harry, and John Hillewaert.

A Wake Service with recitation of the Rosary took place Sunday June 9 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. The Mass of Christian Burial was Monday June 10, at St. Ann’s. Interment was at Saratoga Cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Hornbeck, Sam Verlancke, Patrick Dillon, Geoffrey Dillon, John Hillewaert and Tony Hillewaert.
