SMHS students to sponsor Breast Cancer Walk

Those looking to actively fight against breast cancer can participate in the Breast Cancer Walk July 6 at the Saratoga Resort and Spa.

This community walk, done around the Saratoga Golf Course and intended to raise money, is sponsored by Saratoga Middle/High School and SkillsUSA, a nationwide-based career and technical student organization. Freshman Cruz Escobedo and eighth-graders Katie Loose and Alicia Zaragoza, all from Saratoga Middle/High School, are actively participating in the event.

Proceeds from those who sign up to participate in the event go toward the Dallas, Texas-based Susan G. Komen Foundation.

“Once we buy all the T-shirts that we give to everybody who participates, we donate all the money we make to the Susan G. Komen Foundation,” Loose said. “We’ll be helping out setting up the track and making sure everyone is where they need to be. We went to a meeting in Cheyenne because they put on a Susan G. Komen walk, and we met with the ladies who were on the board for that and they gave us ideas on how to run our own walk.”

At the event the girls are also going to help pass out T-shirts for people who registered. Escobedo said people can register before the event or once they get there.

“People can register beforehand and we’ve been giving registration forms to all the businesses that have sponsored, so people can pick them up there,” Escobedo said. “They can also register at the actual walk, where they just fill out the form, we’ll hand them their shirts, they’ll give us the money and then they can walk. There will be food and drinks, and there will be products at the high school that tech classes have made.”

Escobedo mentioned sandblasted rocks and special glasses as some of those student-made products available for purchase.

“There will be glasses that have the Susan G. Komen cancer symbol on them that people can buy, and all that money raised from that will also be sent to the Susan G. Komen Foundation,” she said. “There are glasses, sandblasted rocks, and a whole bunch of other projects we made. Any sort of help we could contribute to an organization that’s going to find a cure would be good. My family hasn’t suffered from breast cancer, but it’s had cancer in it.”

Loose agreed that the cause was important, and said the high rate of breast cancer made her want to get more involved.

“Hearing that one in four women get affected by this made me realize that many people around me one day would come down with breast cancer,” she said. “I wanted to be able to contribute to the cause to be able to help those who had been affected by it.”

Zaragoza was also grateful for how the proceeds from the event would be donated.

“Just donating this money would help women get mammograms or help them find a cure for cancer,” she said.

The Breast Cancer Walk starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 6 at Saratoga Resort and Spa. Registration forms will be taken up to the day of the walk. Teams will be discounted $5 per person. Teams must be five and up.

People can also register by email at [email protected], or cut out the advertisement in the May 29 and June 6 issues of the Saratoga Sun and mail it to Saratoga Middle/High School at P.O. Box 1710, Saratoga, WY 82331.

There is a $20 registration fee per person.

T-shirts come with registrations, and all proceeds are to be donated to the Wyoming Susan G. Komen Foundation.
