Panthers unite and strike: Saratoga boasts two first-place relay teams at state tourney, Falk breaks school record

Series: long jump | Story 1

Two Saratoga High School relay teams walked away with first-place victories at last weekend’s Wyoming High School State Track Tournament in Casper.

For the 1600 meter relay, Ben Gates, Rodrigo Escobedo, Ben Falk and Luke Lineberry achieved first place with a winning time of 3:33.68, and for the 3200 meter relay, Gates, Escobedo, Cameron Collamer and Daniel Kerbs secured a first-place time of 8:31.21.

“We had some pretty good relays with some quality runners, and the boys in the 3200 meter relay really stepped it up,” coach Rex Hohnholt said. “The boys in both races really mentally prepared themselves for their races. It was also great to see Rodrigo, as only a freshman, already get two state championships with the relay teams, and that makes a huge impact for him. You’ve got to hold your own and live in the moment while you’ve got it, because you never know if things like that will happen again later in high school.”

Individually, Falk placed second in the 400 meter run, with times of 51.97 in the preliminaries and 51.31 in the finals. Hohnholt said Falk’s quick time in the finals also managed to replace a Saratoga High School record.

“With his time of 51.31 in the finals, Ben broke the old school record of 51.44 held by Brian Willford,” he said.

Hohnholt also commended Gates for his third-place win in the 800 meter run (2:02.15), and top 10 placings in his three other events. In addition to his victories in two relays and the 800 meter run, Gates also scored seventh in the 400 meter dash.

“Ben had an outstanding weekend with the 3200 relay, 800 meter, and 400 meter dash,” Hohnholt said. “Luke Lineberry also ran his best, and that was good to see another senior go out that way.”

Although none of the team’s girls placed individually or as a team, Hohnolt said he was proud to see them achieve their personal bests.

“Kennadie Love gave her best jump with 7 feet, and Taylor Smith gave her best time in the 100 hurdles (18.74),” he said. “Veronica Lincoln also did well in the long jump (14’6.25).”

Honholt also expressed sadness to see seniors Gates, Kerbs, Lineberry, Love and Smith move on, but anticipated great things for next year.

“You hate to lose your seniors after four years of spending a lot of time with them and watching them excel and receive accolades,” he said. “We had some quality seniors, and I look forward to seeing how the ones coming up replace the ones leaving. For next year, I also look forward to having individual conversations with kids, teaching them to set goals and seeing which kids are up for challenges and making adjustments.”
