A hunting education opportunity is coming to the Valley.
Wyoming Game and Fish Game Warden Biff Burton and Supervisory Resource Specialist for SERCD Joe Parsons, along with other guest instructors, will help conduct a hunter safety course May 17 through May 19 at the Saratoga Town Hall in the council chambers.
The May 17 course begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. The May 18 course will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. And the May 19 course will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. The May 19 course will also include some time at the shooting range, Burton said.
Anyone who was born after Jan. 1, 1966 is required to receive hunter safety education if they want to hunt, Burton said. However, the classes are often fun for friends and family.
“It’s a great bonding experience for parents and children or even friends,” Burton said.
The class is also helpful for those who don’t intend to hunt, but want to learn more about firearms, Burton said.
“We get people who don’t really intend to hunt, but they come to our classroom to learn more about firearms or outdoors skills,” he said.
The class costs $5 per person, which will cover several expenses including materials and light snacks.
The class is not intended to create “hunting experts,” Burton said, but will teach students young and old alike, firearm safety, hunting ethics and responsibility, basic survival and first aid skills, wildlife management, wildlife identification, gun handling, archery equipment handling, black powder guns and much more.
The hunter safety course will not require a minimum age limit, but younger students are encouraged to have an adult present, Burton said.
At the end of instruction, students will take a 50 question test to grade what they retained in the class.
Burton has been instructing hunter safety courses since 1987. He said most people will pass the course as long as they stay engaged with the course.
