Obituary: Roxana Louise Johnson

Roxana Louise Johnson, 68, of Encampment, passed away April 25, 2013, at her residence in the presence of her loving family.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1944 in Saratoga, to Ronald and Dorothy Wolfard. She grew up in the Encampment area, attended Beaver Creek School through the sixth grade until schools were consolidated and she attended Encampment School, where she graduated from high school. 

She attended the University of Wyoming and graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics Education.

In September 1965 Roxana married Jim Johnson.  In March 1967, after graduating from the University, Jim and Roxana moved to the Encampment Valley where they ranched and raised their family. 

Roxana was involved in many community activities and touched many lives along the way. As a child, she was a member of the BEVO 4-H club and was a 4-H leader for more than 45 years. She was involved with the Make It With Wool Contest for many years as the district and state director and assisted with the national contest as well.

Roxana was an avid seamstress, quilter and knitter. She enjoyed teaching others these skills. She was a member of the Encampment Planning Commission,  Grand Encampment Cowboy  Gathering Outfit and helped to bring the Bountiful Basket Food Coop to Encampment.

Roxana was a lay reader at St. James Episcopal Church for many years and was involved with the Mariners Club since moving back to Encampment in 1967.

She was also involved in many other clubs and organizations. Roxana had a very active life and enjoyed helping and serving others.

Roxana was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Merl Randolph and brother Adrian R. Wolfard.  She is survived by her husband Jim, of 47 years, sons Ed (Kathy) Johnson, James (Lisa) Johnson, daughters Elizabeth (Tim) Downare, and Amanda (Daniel) Batteiger, six grandsons and six granddaughters as well as her sisters Marilyn Brown, Connie Wagnon, Laura (Fred) Rettelle, Sally (Jim) Wells, Peggy (Jim) Russell, and brother Ed (Carla)Wolfard.

Memorial services took place Monday at the Encampment High School Gymnasium. Private interment will take place in the Encampment Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Mrs. Johnson’s memory be made to either Wyoming Make It With Wool or St. James Episcopal Church, both at P.O. Box 215, Encampment, WY 82325.
