When she first started wrestling, her presence on the mat was sometimes met with apprehension.
Some boys would forfeit before the match started when faced with wrestling her. Some schools would not even allow her to compete in matches.
“When it came to tournaments and the community, there were definite stigmas that would arise occasionally,” said Leah Stoner, assistant wrestling coach at HEM Junior/Senior High School.
