Activity assistant gets training

At Deseret Health and Rehab, residents enjoyed many activities throughout the week. The Activity Department offers a wide variety of activities each week to meet the residents’ interests, as well as the physical, mental and psychological well-being of each resident.

Brenda Zeiger, our Activity Assistant, has just completed the online basic Activity Professionals course and is currently taking the online advanced course. I took both courses at Casper College in 1995-1997. These courses enable us to provide an activity program that meets the needs and interests of our residents.

Games throughout the week provided fun and laughter. On Monday afternoon, five residents played Horse Racing with Jeanette Baker winning. On Wednesday afternoon, 13 residents played Bingo, and on Friday afternoon, 12 residents played Bingo. Phillip Proulx and Nadine Caleb won Four Corners. Jeanette Baker, Truth Karstoft and Kenny Hoagland won Blackouts. Our Bingo helpers were Lila Worden, Betty Dean, Roxie Baldwin, Dawna Erickson and Jill Martin. On Saturday afternoon, seven residents played Blackjack with Jeanette Baker winning.

On Sunday afternoon, Pastor Stinson of the Saratoga Missionary Alliance Church led our church service. Joe Doris Davis assisted with religious music on the keyboard, and Joe Gaspari assisted with hymn singing.

On Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings, Brenda Zeiger did Reading Fun, reading Debbie Macomber’s Summer on Blossom Street.

On Tuesday morning, Pastor Easterling offered Bible Study to residents with his wife, Debbie, assisting on the guitar.

On Wednesday morning, Janice Kerpan and Mildred Hennek gave beautiful hairdos to 10 ladies.

On Wednesday morning, Brenda Zeiger did Nail Care for 10 residents.

On Thursday during supper, Teense Willford sang and played country western music on his guitar for 29 residents.

On Thursday afternoon, we celebrated the birthdays of Nadine Caleb and Frank Jereb with cake and ice cream.

Evening activities included Turner Classic Movies: “Dr. Zhivago” on Sunday, “Poltergeist” on Monday, “The Rocket” on Tuesday, “Hold Back the Dawn” on Wednesday, “Double Indemnity” on Thursday, “Here Comes Mr. Jordan” on Friday, and “On the Waterfront” on Saturday. On Tuesday afternoon, residents watched the VCR movie, “Miss Congeniality”.

We want to thank Jill Martin for the kind financial donation to Bingo.

The Activity program relies on volunteers to enhance residents’ lives. If interested, please call 326-8212 and ask for the Activity Director, Tom Mansfield.
