Town of Encampment okays vacation pay

The Encampment Town Council approved paying ex-police chief, Nick Finer, for eight-and-one-half days of accrued vacation, Thursday.

During the council meeting, council member Mary Martin said Finer’s contract stated that the vacation days start to accrue from day one, but the employee cannot use vacation until after one year of employment.

Martin also pointed out the termination section of the contract states vacation pay will be paid upon termination of the contract.

After discussion, the council voted unanimously to pay Finer the accrued vacation at a rate of $25 per hour.

Lloyd Buford, Encampment’s remaining police officer, submitted his letter of intent to retire at the meeting Thursday. His retirement was approved by the council.

Cory Nuhn, Encampent Fire Department Chief, reported there was a fire at the Encampment sawmill.

Nuhn reported the fire department was able to subdue the flames and Nuhn credited Sheldon Thompson, owner/ operator of the mill, stating the mill was well-swept of sawdust and debris.

“The fire would have crawled across the floor if they didn’t have it as clean as they did,” Nuhn said. “The loss would have been total if it wasn’t swept up.”

The town of Encampment also approved to retire Carbon Power and Light (CP&L) Services that are idle.

“The well at the at the town dump and a snowcross track have been abandoned for a few years now,” Encampment Town Clerk, Doreen Harvey said Tuesday.

The Boy Scouts of America petitioned the council for the use of the Rendezvous area, town property behind the Encampment Museum, for camping on March 1-3.

Joe Morrison, secretary, and Josh Saier, president, of the Sierra Madre Mountain Man Muzzleloaders and Rendezvous also petitioned the council to use the grounds for their annual Rendezvous in July and for their black powder shoot on June 1.

The the council voted unanimously to allow all the events.
