The Carbon County School District No. 2 Speech team returned home as 1A/2A champions of the Evanston Speech and Debate meet.
Encampment juniors Rebecca Treat and Kaylyn Wesel earned sixth place with the humor duet “Robin Hood” competing against 10 other Wyoming High Schools.
Wessel earned third place in drama.
Colton Woolfolk continues to inspire his team as a role model with his impromptu speaking, Speech coach Brenda Ostendorf said.
“The more astute one becomes while competing in the category of impromptu speaking, the more analytical one becomes regarding the finished product.”
Saratoga freshmanLeam Engle, a team novice, entered his first impromptu competition.
Friday, the speech team travels to compete in the Natrona County High School Tournament in Casper. The team members will enter into new categories while still performing their established pieces.
Encampment freshman Jacob Dickinson is presenting an oratory speech on gun control.
The importance of authenticity is the topic of Saratoga freshman Katlynne Hytrek’s oratory.
Engle will present a “new release” comedy monologue and HEM junior Aleck Freeman will showcase a cutting from a favorite Louis L’Amour novel.
The students are always interested in performing for the public, Ostendorf said and if anyone in the community would like the speech team to do a presentation they can contact the Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow High School, Saratoga High School or Encampment School. Their numbers are 325-6545, 326-5246 and 327-5442 respectively.
Speech competitors will respond to each invitation upon review of their upcoming tournament schedules.
Local residents interested in judging at the Feb. 22 and 23 meet in Rawlins, which is co-hosted by Carbon County School District No. 1 and CCSD#2, can contact Ostendorf at 325-6545.
