Encampment and Saratoga put their JV squads on the floor Thursday, and both the men and women had a chance to hone skills that will be featured on varsity teams in the coming years.
The Saratoga men built up a commanding lead by the end of the first quarter in a game that see-sawed all the way to the end. Panther fouls repeatedly sent Encampment to the line in the second quarter and the Tigers took advantage of the free throws, cutting Saratoga’s lead to 1 point halfway through the quarter.
Encampment started the second half with a three point lead, 20-17, and continued to play aggressively but could not pull away from Saratoga. Both teams jostled for the advantage and halfway through the third quarter, the score was tied 24-24, but the Panthers managed to claw out an 8 point lead by the end of the quarter.
As the minutes blinked away in the fourth quarter, Saratoga poured it on and the Tigers found themselves down by 11. The Tigers kept up their offensive attack, and almost pulled out a comeback, but the clock and a persistent Saratoga defense combined to keep Encampment out of the win column. The final score was a close 42-48.
The women’s JV played two quarters and Saratoga came out on top, 9-6.
The six Encampment players coming off a tough loss to Saratoga’s varsity team, had to keep their suits on and push through two more quarters of play.
The Lady Tigers dug deep and found some reserve strength in the second quarter, scoring 6 points to Saratoga’s 2, but the Panthers held on for the victory.
