We at the Saratoga Sun would like to applaud the Healthcare Sustainability Project Subcommittee (HSPS) for their efforts in trying to usher in a workable healthcare system. It is not just that the group is trying to bring a better medical facility and high quality doctors, nurses and staff to the Valley, it is the way they have gone about it. Representation The HSPS has done a good job representing the entire Valley in choosing their members. Leslie McLinskey is on the subcommittee to represent the Riverside/Encampment part... Full story
Nobody reads the paper. While this statement, for the most part, seems to be made without any ill intent—it doesn’t reduce the sting to those who work for a newspaper. It is no secret that the industry has been having a very public struggle for the past several years. On the national level, newspapers across the United States have either merged or closed for good. According to a report from the University of North Carolina Center for Innovation & Sustainability in Local Med... Full story
Sometimes when reading over the national news of our country, I get the feeling we are a place that is ready to explode. Fortunately, because I am a avid reader of history books, I really believe lessons learned will prevent this country from falling apart. Paying attention to the past is just smart in my book. It started in Virginia My first real memory of learning about history was in 4th grade while I was in the school system of Virginia. That state is proud to teach their... Full story
There is a local restaurant that frequently uses the motto: “This is Wyoming. Act accordingly.” While I find that exceedingly amusing, I got to thinking about what exactly that entails. Following is the long version of what I think that saying really means … or should mean anyway. Please note that this in no way represents the intent or meaning the eatery in question possibly intended. Here we go: Honesty I find Wyomingonians respond better to brutal honesty than a half truth...
The world changed for me on the Saturday morning of March 16. I got a phone call from the sister of my friend KC telling me the person I had known since I was 15, had passed on. I have written about KC in my previous two columns detailing her bravery in living with stage 4 cancer for nine years and her recent decision to go into hospice. She had laughed just two month ago saying she would beat the six month timeframe most people were given going into this type of care. Unfortu... Full story
Have you ever noticed that a lot of movies, or television series, that are supposed to take place in Wyoming look a lot like somewhere else? While I may not be a Wyoming native, I still consider the area to be my home state and I will often jump at the chance to see a movie or television show that is set here. Unfortunately, a lot of them don’t quite have a Wyoming feel to them. When I was watching “Wind River,” the only frame in the entire movie that seemed to be filme... Full story
Apparently America can’t get enough football. Well, at least the organizers of the new Alliance of American Football think so. The Alliance of American Football (or, because all sports leagues must use acronyms—AAF) is a new league hoping to sate our deep and abiding thirst for MORE FOOTBALL. Now you can watch the Arizona Hotshots, Atlanta Legends, Birmingham Iron, Memphis Express, Orlando Apollos, Salt Lake Stallions, San Antonio Commanders or the San Diego Fleet wreak gri...
You often hear it is a small world, but I have been blown away a few times by how true this statement really is. I have instances that are amazing. Well, at least I think so. The first time I remember clearly telling myself it is a small world was when I was in a bar in the city of Taichung, Taiwan and I met a girl who had lived on the same dorm floor I had when I attended the University of Maryland. I lived in an eight story building that had 80 students on each floor. This...
Dear Editor, I implore anyone considering supporting a tax increase on Wyoming’s wind-generated electricity to first consider the studies conducted exclusively on wind energy development, taxation, and the renewable energy market and know all the facts. After years of closely considering all issues, we in Carbon County and other counties know that keeping taxes at the current level for wind plants is fair and gives us the best opportunity for securing new economic diversity and billions of dollars in new investment in W...
“Virginia Dale had been more successful at another time and place. (Jack) Slade was taken prisoner and plans were to lynch him. The condemned had persuaded his guards to send for his beautiful wife who quickly arrived on horseback and was ushered to her husband. The door of Slade’s confinement was opened, at which time Mrs. Slade flashed two revolvers and the pair walked away at gunpoint. They mounted the horse under gunfire and raced down the road; neither was hurt.” ~ Gay D... Full story

How much do you trust the government to police itself? This last election cycle, transparency was a big talking point for everyone from the gubernatorial candidates down to municipal positions. Upon being elected, Governor Mark Gordon even organized a transparency committee to find ways that the State of Wyoming could be more open and available to constituents and taxpayers. When the 65th Wyoming Legislature convened, however, three bills aimed at limiting transparency were introduced. These bills, in one way or another,...
This year, Saratoga Skijoring went 3D. In previous years, there were Novice, Intermediate, and Expert classes a team could enter. A team might enter the “Intermediate” division and have a time slower than the fastest in the “Novice” category. That would win them … exactly nothing. Last week’s Saratoga snow and track event featured SkijorUSA’s new 3D system. A competing team no longer enters just a particular category and all teams are sorted into divisions based on their best...
