  • Are you ready for some (more) FOOTBALL?

    Keith McLendon|Updated Mar 12, 2019

Apparently America can’t get enough football. Well, at least the organizers of the new Alliance of American Football think so. The Alliance of American Football (or, because all sports leagues must use acronyms—AAF) is a new league hoping to sate our deep and abiding thirst for MORE FOOTBALL. Now you can watch the Arizona Hotshots, Atlanta Legends, Birmingham Iron, Memphis Express, Orlando Apollos, Salt Lake Stallions, San Antonio Commanders or the San Diego Fleet wreak gri...

  • It actually is a small world after all

    Mike Armstrong|Updated Mar 5, 2019

You often hear it is a small world, but I have been blown away a few times by how true this statement really is. I have instances that are amazing. Well, at least I think so. The first time I remember clearly telling myself it is a small world was when I was in a bar in the city of Taichung, Taiwan and I met a girl who had lived on the same dorm floor I had when I attended the University of Maryland. I lived in an eight story building that had 80 students on each floor. This...

  • Wind tax information

    Updated Feb 27, 2019

Dear Editor, I implore anyone considering supporting a tax increase on Wyoming’s wind-generated electricity to first consider the studies conducted exclusively on wind energy development, taxation, and the renewable energy market and know all the facts. After years of closely considering all issues, we in Carbon County and other counties know that keeping taxes at the current level for wind plants is fair and gives us the best opportunity for securing new economic diversity and billions of dollars in new investment in W...

  • Carrying the torch of history

    Joshua Wood|Updated Feb 27, 2019

“Virginia Dale had been more successful at another time and place. (Jack) Slade was taken prisoner and plans were to lynch him. The condemned had persuaded his guards to send for his beautiful wife who quickly arrived on horseback and was ushered to her husband. The door of Slade’s confinement was opened, at which time Mrs. Slade flashed two revolvers and the pair walked away at gunpoint. They mounted the horse under gunfire and raced down the road; neither was hurt.” ~ Gay D... Full story

  • In government we trust?

    Saratoga Sun Editorial|Updated Feb 20, 2019

How much do you trust the government to police itself? This last election cycle, transparency was a big talking point for everyone from the gubernatorial candidates down to municipal positions. Upon being elected, Governor Mark Gordon even organized a transparency committee to find ways that the State of Wyoming could be more open and available to constituents and taxpayers. When the 65th Wyoming Legislature convened, however, three bills aimed at limiting transparency were introduced. These bills, in one way or another,...

  • Gaits and gates in 3D

    Keith McLendon|Updated Feb 13, 2019

This year, Saratoga Skijoring went 3D. In previous years, there were Novice, Intermediate, and Expert classes a team could enter. A team might enter the “Intermediate” division and have a time slower than the fastest in the “Novice” category. That would win them … exactly nothing. Last week’s Saratoga snow and track event featured SkijorUSA’s new 3D system. A competing team no longer enters just a particular category and all teams are sorted into divisions based on their best...

  • Out of control

    Mike Armstrong|Updated Feb 6, 2019

Life defining moments are sometimes easy to recognize as they are happening and other instances it takes a little time to realize they occurred. I just had an occasion where I had a life lesson that I could feel changing me, but I didn’t know how to cope. There was so much swirling around in my mind. It was like the outdoors with the copious amounts of snow coming down almost every day the past few weeks. The day before the first wave of snow, I talked to my friend KC who has...

  • Rampages down Pat

    Keith McLendon|Updated Jan 29, 2019

I got a text with a meme in it from a friend the Monday after the Eneffelle division championships were completed last Sunday. It was a photo of Forrest Gump. Above the photo were the words, “and just like that,” below the face was, “we are now all Rams fans!” My exact reply was, “Damn straight!” Belicheat and Co. You may be able to tell I am no fan of the New England Patriots. I begrudgingly admit they are good—if not even great. I just don’t care for a coach (Bill “What Che...

  • A place in the community

    Joshua Wood|Updated Jan 23, 2019

It’s rather hard to believe that I have, officially, been working for the Saratoga Sun for one year. I remember being anxious the night before and being even more anxious as I waited outside the office in my car. I had no idea if I would do well, if anyone would enjoy reading what I wrote or if I would even find my place in the community. Now, a year later, I’m still anxious and still nervous, but at least I know that people are reading what I write. I’ve had people appro...

  • No place for poor sportsmanship

    Saratoga Sun Editorial|Updated Jan 16, 2019

Our local youths can be at their best when they play sports. They sacrifice their time and sweat to practice. They keep their grades up. They give their heart and soul to their team and the prospect of winning. They learn sportsmanship and teamwork. They also learn respect. In short, our student athletes learn all kinds of valuable lessons from the game. It is a shame that they also learn how petty adults can be. Not in our Paper The Saratoga Sun Facebook page bore a glaring example of that pettiness and poor sportsmanship...

  • I get around

    Mike Armstrong|Updated Jan 8, 2019

It is the beginning of January and winter is now here. I have to admit, I am not thrilled to deal with this time of year because of the snow. Not because I don’t enjoy winter sports, but because I live 40 miles away from my workplace. Let me tell you, there are times I feel like northern Carbon County is the Antarctic’s little brother. I don’t drive the most snow worthy car either. It gets great gas mileage, but once the roads get more than three inches, I am taking my life...

    Joshua Wood|Updated Jan 2, 2019

“I will sail a friendly course, file a friendly chart On a sea of love and a thankful heart.” ~The Muppet Christmas Carol I had full intentions of writing a column that looked back on my year here at the Saratoga Sun, but as so often happens, life had other plans. This time, it was my son who provided a subject I couldn’t pass up. In this time of post-Christmas and post-New Year letdown, I hope this column provides something to lift your spirits. Christmas has come and gone...

  • In defense of public defense

    Updated Jan 2, 2019

Editor, I would like to protest the upcoming changes with the Carbon County Public Defender’s office. The powers that be are proposing getting rid of administrative support staff in Rawlins thus making defendants call Laramie for assistance. As a longtime administrative assistant for a busy real estate agent I can not imagine what a disaster this is going to be. Waiting around for the lawyer to show up when, if there was a paralegal at the office you could get a quick question answered or that piece of paper signed and n...
