  • The staycation

    Mike Armstrong|Dec 30, 2020

I am coming off my vacation which started just before the Christmas holidays. It was my first vacation in almost four years. I did have time off about two years back, but that was moving my folk’s belongings from Maine to Colorado. My sister and I drove a 26 foot truck across the country in four days. Getting out to where they lived in Maine took two days by plane and car, and driving back in the truck to Colorado used up most of my time off. A great road trip with my sis, but it was definitely... Full story

  • Three rotations of the Sun

    Joshua Wood|Dec 23, 2020

Albert Einstein once said “Time is an illusion” and I don’t think those words have ever been truer than in 2020. With only one week left in the year, I’m still having trouble wrapping my head around the fact that it isn’t March or April. Indeed, after March 13–a Friday–it seems as if all time just became a little more fluid. Time has passed so quickly, yet so slowly, this year that I almost forgot that next week will be my three year anniversary with the Saratoga Sun. That’s right, January 2 wil... Full story

  • Here are some ideal Wyoming-themed Christmas gifts

    Bill Sniffin|Dec 16, 2020

Okay, it’s Christmas and it’s time to buy gifts. The year 2020 has been so difficult to Wyoming business people, it just seemed to make sense for us to reach out and support Wyoming-made products. Here are some suggestions from some friends around the state: Bob Grammens of Sheridan Media suggested: Jake’s Lures. Known worldwide but made in Sheridan. Website: https://www.jakeslures.com/ and Kim Love recommends Tom Balding Bits and Spurs. Known worldwide and all made in Sheridan. • Masks aren't the problem

    Mike Armstrong|Dec 9, 2020

Jeez, it is incredible to me how resistant people are to wearing masks in the county, state and country. I have heard people ridicule anything to do with wearing a mask more in the past month or so than any other time I can remember. I have to say, its embarrassing as an American. I have written a fair amount of columns telling of living overseas and lessons I took from exposing myself to different cultures. In any of those stories, I hope it comes across loud and clear how proud I was to be an... Full story

  • Reader in support of masks

    Dec 9, 2020

Dear Editor, WE ARE SUCH A SELFISH PEOPLE! I am ashamed. Get smart people. The facts about Covid are facts. The science and health people do know what they are saying. Quit listening to the drivel that must be out there from what the youth had to say in this Wednesday’s paper. (And the Carbon County Republican Party) Do your part so that all of us can get back to ball games and weddings and family dinners. Your failure to do your part is wrecking our country financially and causing so many to mourn the loss of someone they love. Some have l...

  • Being thankful for the breaks

    Joshua Wood|Dec 2, 2020

“Josh, do you know how long it’s been since we’ve put out a 12 page paper?” It’s mid-afternoon on Monday. Mike Armstrong and Dana Davis ask me this question when it’s well after noon and I’m thinking about content and advertising for this week’s paper. Of course, to be honest, I’m always thinking about content and advertising as it is a hazard of the job. Throughout most of 2020, the Saratoga Sun has put out papers ranging in size from 16 pages to 36 pages. I actually had to go looking through o...

  • Change is tough but worth facing

    Mike Armstrong|Nov 25, 2020

You would never know it- given that I have changed jobs, homes and residences in countries like some people change jeans but I really don’t like change. I am a guy that gets set in his ways and don’t like to mix things up much once I get comfortable. Saying that, I make the best of a situation when I realize change is coming and there is not much I can do to stop it. Feeling powerless to stop an oncoming onslaught of change where I don’t know the outcome is not a great feeling. Unfor...

  • Emotions running high about potential COVID-19 restrictions

    Bill Sniffin|Nov 18, 2020

It looks like a whole lot of people in Wyoming are fired up about the recent spike in COVID-19 cases and deaths here in the Cowboy State. Gov. Mark Gordon was about as emotional and angry as we have seen him during his press conference Nov. 13. He referred to a portion of our state’s population as “knuckleheads” for not practicing social distancing and wearing masks. Meanwhile in Casper, infectious disease specialist Dr. Mark Dowell and various elected officials were hooted off the stage recently by angry citizens when the officials tried... Full story

  • It's tough to lose

    Mike Armstrong|Nov 11, 2020

The hardest part of my job by far is going up to a coach who has just lost a big game. There have been occasions that the loss was so painful, I could see tears in the eyes of the players as they listened to their coach and I honestly could feel the pain these young folk were feeling. I have even decided it wasn’t the proper time to talk to the coach because there was still so much being processed. I have been covering high school sports for three and a half years and have been exposed to s... Full story

  • Museums are valued

    Nov 11, 2020

Editor, The overwhelming victory of the Saratoga-Ryan Park Museum District in the recent general election is a victory for all museums in Carbon County. What this win for the Saratoga Museum tells us is that people in our communities value and cherish their museums. Furthermore, the tax that the Saratoga Museum will receive will go far in creating financial stability for their museum and when one museum strengthens all museums benefit working together. All of this being said, I would like to remind you all that the museums in Elk Mountain,...

  • Thankful for support

    Nov 11, 2020

Dear Editor, On behalf of the newly formed Saratoga-Ryan Park Museum District, I want to thank everyone who worked to pass the ballot measure that will help fund the preservation of our shared heritage. There are so many people who were involved in the process and what unites us all is a love of our communities’ history and a desire to preserve that history. Thank you to all those who gathered the required number of signatures, those landowners who signed the petitions to request the issue be placed on the ballot, those who formed, managed a...

  • When are unofficial results official?

    Joshua Wood|Nov 4, 2020

Inserted in this week’s Saratoga Sun, and available on the Saratoga Sun website, are unofficial election results. This is a service that we have provided to our readers for, at least, the past three election cycles. This year, however, I want to stress the use of the word “unofficial.” Here in Carbon County, and in the state of Wyoming, we are rather lucky when it comes to our unofficial results on election night. With polls closing at 7 p.m., results are often available on the Secretary of St... Full story

  • American, regardless of party

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 28, 2020

When we at the Saratoga Sun write columns, it is our opinion or take on a subject, and not the newspaper’s stance. I try to steer clear of topics that deal with politics in general because we are all Americans and, although I might not agree with a certain value of a political party, I know the person from an opposing party believes what they do because they want the best for our country. So, who am I to say something is right or wrong? When I lived overseas, no matter what party we come f... Full story

  • Below the Saratoga standard

    Oct 28, 2020

Editor, I am compelled to write this letter based on the actions of thugs that have decided to embark on mischief here in Saratoga. I believe the citizens of Saratoga have a standard of acceptable behavior that has been challenged. If you are one of the cowards that has trespassed and stolen political signs or has decided to deface the portable toilets at Veterans Island Park with graffiti, then you have fallen short of that standard. If you were involved in either of the acts of stealing or vandalizing other people’s property, then you are a...
