  • That Big Red Wave Sure Would Have Helped Wyoming

    Bill Sniffin|Nov 17, 2022

Elections have consequences. Especially on a national level. It’s taken a few days to digest the consequences of the big mid-term national elections Tuesday. Here in Wyoming, our general election was a faint imitation of our amazing primary last August. That primary drew record numbers of voters and saw international press interest as it was viewed as a Liz Cheney versus Donald Trump battle. Liz was trounced by national record numbers in that race by Harriet Hageman, who cruised to general election victory Tuesday. Harriet is now our representa...

Editor, The reason my letter is being submitted is that recently my research indicated that a cargo trailer was stolen from Bill Schroer of Saratoga. This incident is still under investigation by the Saratoga Police Department which the recovery of this stolen trailer averages less than 1%. Trailers are the most often things stolen on wheels and the least often found. Our overworked and understaffed police departments place stolen trailers on the bottom of the list and eventually end up in the garbage can. This loss is devastating and heartbrea...

To the editor, I drove into your little town on Thursday night on my way back from Lincoln. I’ve been making the run from Vegas back to Lincoln for several months due to delivery issues with electronics, but I had seen nothing but good roads. The interstate was an ice rink so I took the exit south and landed in Saratoga. It was late, about 11, and I was starving. I was standing in front of the Cantina wondering what I was going to do for food. The convenience stores were all closed. I was unprepared for any of this, but I understand the p...

  • Kindness in Carbon County

    Mike Armstong|Nov 10, 2022

I am getting ready to do a presentation for an organization which wants to hear about my time in Asia. I have been looking over a lot of items and photos of my time in Taiwan and China. My years in Taiwan were in a big city, sort of, 3 million, but actually for Asia, Taichung is a medium city at best. Running a business, a restaurant/bar in particular that focused on Western cuisine, had me in the forefront of the expat community. I threw a lot of parties for different Western cultures and got exposed to tons of things I didn’t know about peopl...

  • Scary Times At The Bottom Of The Wild Food Chain

    Bill Sniffin|Nov 3, 2022

Many decades ago, when my brother Ron and I would go big-game hunting, it was comforting to know that we were at the top of the food chain. We had powerful rifles and we knew that no creature out there could cause us serious harm. Our anti-hunter acquaintances always pointed out the unfairness of “hunting,” asking what would we do if the other side could hunt us? Sometime in the 1980s, all this changed. From that time on, grizzly bears have been encouraged to live all over Western Wyoming. It was a game-changer. Human hunters now could be vie...

Editor, Well folks listen up. The November elections are coming up. I’m voting for the second amendment. I’m voting for the next Supreme Court Justice. I’m voting for the electoral college, and the Republic we live in. I’m voting for the Police and law and order. I’m voting for the Military, and the veterans who fought for and died for this Country. I’m voting for the flag that is always missing from the Democratic background. I’m voting for the right to speak my opinion and not to be censored. I’m voting for secured borders. I’m voting for...

    Virginia Parker|Oct 27, 2022

Who hasn’t pondered the idea of a perfect world? We imagine what it would look like with glittering visions of world peace and vehicles that rely on nothing but oxygen to fuel them. Who could we elect? What ideals should we uphold? How can we shift and evolve our society into a flawless, irreproachable model? Our humanity makes this utopia unattainable. The rigidity necessary to create this kind of society would be a bleak existence. The perfect society is the one without mistakes and thus one w...

Editor, If you haven’t visited the Saratoga Resort and Spa recently, you are missing out on the many improvements made since the devastation of COVID-19. My husband and I live across from the golf course and visit the Snowy Range Brewery at least once a week. We have witnessed several upgrades in the past year and would like to acknowledge the ‘Inn’s’ management for their dedication to remaining a wonderful feature in our fabulous town. The new front entrance, menu, activity shop and greeting staff are reason enough to express our appreci...

  • Pet Personalities

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 20, 2022

A National Geographic article I read recently, on how greater intelligence is being attributed to animals, got me thinking about how smart my pets have been. I have had a lot of pets over the years, but there have also been times in my life, when I had none. Anyway, the article made me go through my life and review my different pets and see how much merit this article had. My first pet was Tippy, a collie pup my dad bought for me, pretty much, right after I was born. He got bigger faster...

  • Never enough time

    Virginia Parker|Oct 13, 2022

My fellow reporter, Mike Armstrong wrote about times changing and it sparked something in me that I wanted to share with you. When I retired, I heard from other retirees that they didn’t know how they got so much done before they retired because they are busier now than when they had a full-time job. I also found myself busy, doing things I enjoyed. Puttering in the yard, hanging out with grandkids and kids, and spending time with friends. What I didn’t do was all the things I thought I wou...

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 6, 2022

Not to jinx myself, but I have been pretty lucky with this whole aging thing. I recently completed lifeguard certification and this body surprised me by being up to the physical aspects of the test. The written part on lifeguarding and CPR was not easy and I was happy to pass it. However, I really didn’t know if I was going to be able to do all the physical tests in the time required. Swimming laps was the one part of the test I was confident in. I was worried aoubt swimming from the shallow e...

  • Autumn falls into Wyoming

    Virginia Parker|Sep 29, 2022

Bringing something akin to a second spring, leaves turning into the colors of flowers, fall is in the air. Our bright blue skies provide a vivid backdrop to the reds, yellows and oranges that splash across the mountains and prairies. It may sound silly but the colors of this time of year make me smile. Fall colors are naturally on the warm color spectrum. These colors are very appealing because they remind me of the earth, something I’m drawn to–nature. The leaves, warmed by the sun, have an...

  • Small towns and their people

    Sep 29, 2022

by Samantha Tylka There are many small towns in today's world. One that really sticks out is Hanna in Carbon County, Wyoming. The population was 841 during the 2010 census. The recent census of 2020 has the town at 673. The town was started as a coal supply location for the Union Pacific Railroad. Much of the town is built on top of the former Hanna No. 4 Mine. What really makes up the town though is the people. We have a lot of events going on to make the town more interesting and fun not just...

  • Encampment feeds the hungry too

    Sep 29, 2022

Editor, The September 15 Saratoga Sun included an article about the Food Bank of Wyoming in Hanna and the local food pantry in Saratoga. We would like to make it known that the town of Encampment has a community food pantry housed at the Presbyterian Church. The pantry is open to all by simply calling any deacon from the Presbyterian Church at any time. This food pantry receives numerous donations, monetarily as well as food, from community members, churches, and the First Lady of Wyoming’s Hunger Initiative. We are also fortunate to receive wi...

  • How leaders take away freedom

    Mike Armstrong|Sep 22, 2022

When I have a bad day, such as yesterday; I had an instance where one of my flexi-pipes, under my sink in the bathroom, came apart spraying water everywhere, I calmed down by reminding myself it could be way worse. I could live in Eastern Ukraine. I really can’t imagine a scenario, like what is happening in that country, especially seeing all the damage which is being done to so many towns and villages. My little pipe coming apart can’t even compare to having a bomb hit my house and losing eve...

  • Queen Elizabeth's passing

    Virginia Parker|Sep 22, 2022

I was not surprised to hear of the Queen’s passing, but I was very sad to hear of it. My entire life I have heard and read about the British Aristocracy. My uncle was from Blackpool, England and spoke occasionally about the royals. He was not a fan, but I became one. So, when I heard of the Queen’s illness and declining health, I reminisced, remembering how impressed I was by her elegance and bearing. All families have scandals and skeletons in the closet that we want to keep hidden but in the...
