A tornado touches down in Carbon County, grounded long enough to create significant damage, and in the process takes out cellular towers and internet infrastructure. It's an emergency, but now the cellphone in the hands of onlookers has become nothing more than a fancy camera. How could the Office of Emergency Management function? "If you don't have internet connectivity or cell towers, then you're kind of hosed," says Rick Parent, call sign W0ZAP. "That's where HAM radio...

Explaining his initiative, Governor Gordon explained, “Our world needs energy and a clean environment–neither is well served if we are not honest about consequences and challenges. Ignoring CCUS as a viable option to decarbonize the grid creates...
The Carbon County Commissioners approved the annual wildland fire management plan last week, allowing the county’s fire department to cooperate with other agencies in the area when responding to wildland fires. Fire Warden John Rutherford said the agreement is between federal, state and county firefighting agencies. “It’s how we conduct business,” he said. The agreement is beneficial to Carbon County as it stipulates that each agency absorbs its own costs while fighting a fire. While the county has several trucks, it doesn’t...
Schools in Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) will soon have a resource officer following recent approval of an agreement by the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC). The commissioners approved the Memorandum of Understanding with CCSD2 during their June 20 meeting. The officer will cover six of the seven schools throughout the district, as the school in Elk Mountain doesn’t have any students enrolled. The SRO will be provided by the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office in an agreement like one already in pla...
The Town of Saratoga will once-again begin the search for a town clerk following the resignation of Marie Christen on June 20. Christen, who struggled at times to hold back tears, read her own resignation letter near the end of the meeting. “I want to express my gratitude for the opportunities I have had while working here. I have learned an immense amount and appreciate the support provided by my co-workers and the council,” said Marie. “I am committed to ensure a smoot...
On Monday, crew members from the Town of Saratoga were using powerwashers to clean algae and grime from the bottom of the Saratoga Municipal Pool in preparation for filling. "It takes a few days to clean it thoroughly, about 14 hours to fill it and 10 days for it to equalize," said Whisper Brunch, Saratoga pool manager. According to Bunch, the pool has enough lifeguards to open. They don't have enough, however, to offer as many water aerobics and swim classes as have been...

Hundred of visitors arrived to the small villages of Encampment and Riverside, ready to enjoy a weekend of entertainment and fun. The melodrama "An Orphan Betrayed," performed by the ever-skillful Grand Encampment...
The night is quiet, with snow drifts reaching the window sills. Streets are filled with slush, freezing quickly as the outside temperature drops below zero. A cough and a wheeze breaks the silence and a mother's hand brushes her child's feverish brow. Fear grips her heart when she sees the readout of 103 on the thermometer. The child coughs again, struggling to take a breath, whimpering weakly. Only a few short weeks ago, this mother's only choice would have been to call an am...

CASPER — Wyoming will halt its passive investments in China starting in July amid growing concern about the risks of investing in the country. The money that Wyoming currently has passively invested in China will be distributed across investments in other nations next month. Wyoming’s active investments in China — those that are managed and individually assessed for risk and return — will still be on the table. The move won’t significantly impact Wyoming’s investments; China only makes up roughly 1% of its entire portfolio,...
In the wee hours of the morning on June 2, some residents of the North Platte Valley were jostled from their slumber when a Magnitude 3.9 earthquake rumbled through the area. Many residents said they didn't feel it, while others heard the rumble and felt the shake. No damage was reported, excep...
CODY - Even in the destruction wrought over the last 15 months of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, hope can be discovered in unexpected places. During a May 18 presentation in Cody, Derek Thomas – an American missionary who has been working in Ukraine since 2013 -- spoke of tulips sprouting in the shadow of decimated Ukrainian homes. Like those tulips, hope and faith are growing in the shadow of the war and the incredible suffering it has caused, Thomas said. In the light o...
