For 36 years now, early March has brought equine excitement to the North Platte Valley. People flock from far and wide to attend the annual Donald E. Erickson Memorial Race, and Saratoga reaps the rewards. The Saratoga Lions Club is hosting the 36th annual Donald E. Erickson Memorial Chariot Races, the state championships, in Saratoga this year. Traditionally held President's Day weekend, this year's Chariot Races were moved to correspond with the state racing association finals to be hosted in Saratoga. This weekend, during the Chariot Races, youth will have the chance to compete in their own event - and adults can bet on it. The second annual Kirsten Campbell Kids race will be held during the middle of the Calcutta on Sunday; which, begins as 11 a.m. According to Michelle Olguin, organizer of the event, the race was started last year in memory of Kirsten Campbell, who passed away in 2014 of cancer. The Carbon County Museum Foundation is hosting an evening with bestselling Wyoming author C. J. Box from 5 to 8 p.m. on March 1 at the Rawlins Depot located at 400 West Front Street in Rawlins.
