  • A stop on the Journey

    Joshua Wood|Updated Jul 24, 2018

As the summer has progressed, one of the constants throughout Wyoming is the sight of cyclists traveling alongside the roads. Since WYO 130 cuts through Saratoga, the town is often an obvious stop for those who are often taking part in cross-country rides. Valley residents may have noticed, however, that many cyclists have gathered at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church which sits along WYO 130, and there's a good reason why. Reverend Susan Dyer has put the church on the...

The "Old Dip" as it was affectionately known by locals, was famous for it's murals painted by Bill Bennett. Old Dip was also home to the world's largest jade bar. The 40-foot countertop was carved from a four ton boulder of Wyoming jade which was found in the southwestern part of the state near Rock Springs. • Mission to Saratoga

    Joshua Wood|Updated Jul 17, 2018

One of the draws of being in the military is being able to travel the world. The same applies to being a pastor and a missionary. Pastor Phil Arndt of Saratoga Alliance Church has done both. While enlisted in the military and stationed in Korea, Arndt was involved with a small group of Christian servicemen and felt the calling to become a pastor. It also helped that being a missionary was in his blood. "My parents had been missionaries in Honduras and Central America," said Ar...

  • Leap into the past

    Joshua Wood|Updated Jul 17, 2018

The official name for the town of Encampment is Grand Encampment and it received that name because it was, indeed, a grand encampment for fur traders, mountain men and local Native American tribes to meet and trade. • Med Bow sparkles

    Mike Armstrong|Updated Jul 10, 2018

The wind was gusty on the evening of July 4 in Medicine Bow as the dusk was closing in. It was blowing hard enough the town's fire department felt it would be wise to move the fireworks from their original set up to make sure there would be no chance of a fire from sparks being sent out past the perimeter they had deemed safe. This delay saw families play with sparklers and assorted other small fireworks. The crowd waited patiently until the music started at around 10 p.m....

  • From April Fools to Friday the 13th

    Mike Armstrong|Updated Jul 10, 2018

Doug and Kathleen Campbell often joke about the fact that they bought the Hotel Wolf on April Fools Day. Obviously not superstitious, they are celebrating the hotel's 125 anniversary on Friday the 13th. The Campbell family has been the proprietors of this immensely popular establishment for 41 years. For any person that comes to Saratoga and doesn't know this historical landmark, the Hotel Wolf is an L-shaped, two and one-half story, brick and frame building on the corner of...

  • The stuff of life

    Staff Report|Updated Jul 10, 2018

Staff Report Ah, summer! It’s finally here with vacations, floating, camping and barbecues. But it’s not fun if someone you love is in the hospital and there is no blood on the shelf. One out of every three people will need blood during their lives, but only one in 20 people regularly give blood. Saratoga’s next blood drive with United Blood Services is from noon to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17 at...

  • Hamming it up

    Joshua Wood|Updated Jul 3, 2018

When one is standing on the shore of the Upper North Platte River, the sounds one expects to hear would be the songs of birds. On one warm summer weekend, June 23, a different sound joined the avian melodies. The arrhythmic beeps of morse code and the whitenoise of an amateur radio in search of other stations could be heard on the property of the Ryan Ranch. The ranch owned by Greg Ryan, who also owns Ryan Electronics, was playing host to the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL)...

    Mike Armstrong|Updated Jul 3, 2018

The Lincoln Highway enters the state from the east on U.S. 30 at Pine Bluffs and, established in 1913, was America's first coast-to-coast highway. Much of the route in Wyoming today is dirt and gravel and is impassable for much of the year, but in celebrating Ft. Steele's 150 year birthday, a historic walk was hosted by the National Park Service on Saturday. The walk was on parts of the original road near Ft. Steele that went by the Platte River where remnants of a bridge...

  • A bumpy road to 100

    Joshua Wood|Updated Jun 25, 2018

On June 15, 1918 the end of World War I was approaching. The University of Wyoming had just announced it would no longer be teaching German as a foreign language, following the lead of many other institutes of higher learning in the United States. The Austrians, at the behest of the Germans, began an offensive along the Piave River in Italy that they would not be able to hold. Also, on that day, Lyle Mackinen was welcomed into the world. Very few people live to be 100 years...
