Have you always wanted to travel over Buffalo Pass between Steamboat and Walden? Do you want to learn more about Howelsen Hill and the early ski industry in Steamboat? If so, then join your friends for the 22nd annual community fall trek. Manpower shortages during World War II led to establishment of a prisoner of war camp at Ryan Park, Wyo., in the Medicine Bow mountains of southern Wyoming, according to a 1943 article in the Saratoga Sun. While a camp, the facility housed Italian, German and Austrian prisoners, the article said. Much has been written about the Heart Mountain detention camp in northern Wyoming. Folk duo Otter Creek will entertain Valley residents starting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19 at the Platte Valley Community Center. Prior to their performance, Peter and Mary Danzig will be working with third and fourth grade students from both Saratoga Elementary and Encampment Schools to compose a verse to a well-known song which will be performed that evening. With summer winding down, Encampment is throwing one last outdoor festival before locals hole back up and the snowbirds again fly south to warmer climes. Sept. 10 and 11, the 22nd annual Copper Days tractor festival will be coming to the south Valley, and the weekend will feature several varieties of fun. The Carbon County Museum will host its fourth annual High Plains Powwow on Saturday at the Carbon County Fairgrounds in Rawlins. This Northern Plains-style dance competition is a rich and immersive opportunity to experience Native American Indian culture.
