As the summer has progressed, one of the constants throughout Wyoming is the sight of cyclists traveling alongside the roads. Since WYO 130 cuts through Saratoga, the town is often an obvious stop for those who are often taking part in cross-country rides. Valley residents may have noticed, however, that many cyclists have gathered at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church which sits along WYO 130, and there's a good reason why. Reverend Susan Dyer has put the church on the...
Dawn Kenneda, Medicine Bow American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 64 Girls State Chairman, had some of her northern Carbon County girls attend the 76th session of the American Legion Auxiliary Wyoming Girls State (Girls State) held June 10-16 at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne. Caitlin Cloe Olsen, and Taylee Widdisen of Hanna Elk Mountain Medicine Bow High School, were selected to attend for their accomplishments to the community. Olsen was selected for her...
One of the draws of being in the military is being able to travel the world. The same applies to being a pastor and a missionary. Pastor Phil Arndt of Saratoga Alliance Church has done both. While enlisted in the military and stationed in Korea, Arndt was involved with a small group of Christian servicemen and felt the calling to become a pastor. It also helped that being a missionary was in his blood. "My parents had been missionaries in Honduras and Central America," said Ar...

The official name for the town of Encampment is Grand Encampment and it received that name because it was, indeed, a grand encampment for fur traders, mountain men and local Native American tribes to meet and trade. During the weekend of July 20, people can get a taste of what those times were like while visiting the grounds of the Grand Encampment Museum. The Sierra Madre Muzzleloaders Mountain Man Rendezvous will begin on Friday, July 20, and will end on Sunday, July 22....

In the early morning hours of July 4, as the sun began to rise over the Snowy Mountain Range, people began to gather in the parking lot of the Platte Valley Community Center (PVCC) to register for the 2018 Cancer Walk/Run. As people sipped coffee and registered, they also listened to music from The Bird and The Bear, Garry "The Bear" Wood, being a cancer survivor himself after a battle with non-hodgkin's lymphoma. A large contingent of those participating in the event had...
The wind was gusty on the evening of July 4 in Medicine Bow as the dusk was closing in. It was blowing hard enough the town's fire department felt it would be wise to move the fireworks from their original set up to make sure there would be no chance of a fire from sparks being sent out past the perimeter they had deemed safe. This delay saw families play with sparklers and assorted other small fireworks. The crowd waited patiently until the music started at around 10 p.m....
Doug and Kathleen Campbell often joke about the fact that they bought the Hotel Wolf on April Fools Day. Obviously not superstitious, they are celebrating the hotel's 125 anniversary on Friday the 13th. The Campbell family has been the proprietors of this immensely popular establishment for 41 years. For any person that comes to Saratoga and doesn't know this historical landmark, the Hotel Wolf is an L-shaped, two and one-half story, brick and frame building on the corner of...
Staff Report Ah, summer! It’s finally here with vacations, floating, camping and barbecues. But it’s not fun if someone you love is in the hospital and there is no blood on the shelf. Here, in the southern part of Wyoming, it takes 500 people a week to donate blood to serve the 47 area hospitals in this region! One out of every three people will need blood during their lives, but only one in 20 people regularly give blood. Saratoga’s next blood drive with United Blood Services is from noon to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17 at...
When one is standing on the shore of the Upper North Platte River, the sounds one expects to hear would be the songs of birds. On one warm summer weekend, June 23, a different sound joined the avian melodies. The arrhythmic beeps of morse code and the whitenoise of an amateur radio in search of other stations could be heard on the property of the Ryan Ranch. The ranch owned by Greg Ryan, who also owns Ryan Electronics, was playing host to the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL)...
Summer is here and Hanna resident Rose Dabbs presided over the monthly Hanna Agricultural Resource Team (HART) meeting held at 5:30 p.m. on June 26 at the Hanna Market to discuss work needed to be done outside the fenced area of the Community Garden. "I would like to talk about the upkeep of the outside of our garden," Dabbs said. "The thistles are growing taller and we need to figure something out because I don't think any one person should have to it." Several ideas were...

Katrina Tolbert and Lennie Powell are the proprietors of the new breakfast eatery. For the time being, a buffet is offered for morning munching fare. The Lincoln Highway enters the state from the east on U.S. 30 at Pine Bluffs and, established in 1913, was America's first coast-to-coast highway. Much of the route in Wyoming today is dirt and gravel and is impassable for much of the year, but in celebrating Ft. Steele's 150 year birthday, a historic walk was hosted by the National Park Service on Saturday. The walk was on parts of the original road near Ft. Steele that went by the Platte River where remnants of a bridge...

On June 15, 1918 the end of World War I was approaching. The University of Wyoming had just announced it would no longer be teaching German as a foreign language, following the lead of many other institutes of higher learning in the United States. The Austrians, at the behest of the Germans, began an offensive along the Piave River in Italy that they would not be able to hold. Also, on that day, Lyle Mackinen was welcomed into the world. Very few people live to be 100 years...
At noon on June 9 at Carbon Cemetery, Victor Gabriel Anderson's life was celebrated by over 150 people. Victor Anderson was born on Dec 1, 1930 and passed away at his home in Coyote Canyon on March 3. There were several generations at the celebration of his life. Wife Nancy started the celebration by telling how she and Victor first came together before their marriage in 1966. "I was told (there was) a fella who lives in Coyote Springs, who may be calling and was that okay?"...

According to an old Chinese proverb, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now." Valley residents will no doubt remember this quote as it was a favorite of the late Glen Levengood, who worked for the Saratoga Encampment Rawlins Conservation District (SERCD) before his passing. Every year for the past 11 years, the SERCD has donated trees to the Town of Saratoga for its Arbor Day celebration. This year, the SERCD donated spruce trees to be...
