The turn out was better than expected with not only volunteers from Rawlins, but Saratoga as well. COVE has not had volunteers for the past 13 years and is looking for people to help out. COVE is a non-profit organization that was started back in the 1980s to help all of Carbon County with advocates for domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. The...
The Hanna Agricultural Resource Team (HART) met at 9 a.m. on June 13 at the Hanna Basin Museum to work on the historical tea garden the group had offered to create for the museum. The Hanna Basin Museum had asked HART to put in an English garden at the cottage back in the summer of...
The Tale of Two Cities disc golf event this past weekend in Encampment and Riverside had 52 contestants this year. This was the largest amount of competitors in the Mother Mountain Anglers (MMA) event that is in its fourth year. The MMA club was founded with this concept in mind;. MMA is a non-profit that started out as a fishing club, but disc golf has taken over. "Disc Golf has definitely grown in our valley in the last four years!," said Shannon Fagan-Craig. Craig, a...
The staff of the City of Rawlins is sad to announce that the Music in the Park concert series dates for June will not be held: June 18th and 25th. After review of the current Statewide Public Heath Order for events as well as discussions with local health officials, city staff have recognized that we cannot safely meet all of the requirements at this time. As new orders are released, staff will reassess. We hope to be able to hold the additional six planned Music in the Parks as scheduled. While updates to the Statewide...
While it remains to be seen if there will be another wave of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the Valley has been relatively unscatched by the global pandemic. Normally insulated from national and international events, this little corner of Wyoming did see impacts as far as businesses and gatherings were concerned. That didn't stop community members, however, from sending out a little Valley hospitality to the rest of the world. As the United States first...
The Hanna Agricultural Resources Team (HART) met for the first time since November at 6:30 p.m. on May 26 at the Hanna Community Garden. HART usually takes a break in the winter time, but starts to reconvene in March. Because of social distancing, the group decided to wait until May and have the meeting outside. Linda Goodrich, secretary of HART, said that all but three of the two dozen garden beds had been spoken for. One of the beds will be slated to renovated. Perry...
The Fossil Museum House is still waiting to be moved to its new home at the Medicine Bow Museum. Its location is already picked out and will be directly across the street from the famous Virginian Hotel, next to the Owen Wister Cabin. Director of the Medicine Bow Museum Saron Biamon said that she talked to the contracted mover two weeks ago. "He said he would be getting on it in the next week," Biamon said. "But I haven't seen any equipment out by the cabin when I went by...
The Grand Encampment Cowboy Gathering is the latest event to fall victim to concerns over the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and its effects on social gatherings. The annual event, which would have celebrated its 18th year, had originally been scheduled for July 17, 18 and 19. Following a meeting of the Grand Encampment Cowboy Gathering Outfit committee, however, the decision was made to cancel the event on May 21. "The Grand Encampment Cowboy Gathering Outfit committee made a...
On Monday May 18, 2020 several families volunteered to clean up Sandy Beach. Christy Keel organized a group of moms in effort to make the beach safer for kids since her son cut his foot on some debris on the beach. Christy said, "There is a lot of mom's around that have kids who like to come and have a play date, we just find a lot of glass, golf balls and fire wood that is left and can't be burned. It makes it really dirty and dangerous for the kids to play. Its fine to have...
Carbon County is slowly showing signs of coming out of the COVID-19 lockdown. The Town of Medicine Bow opened town hall to the public on May 12 after the town council voted on May 11 to do so. It doesn't mean that going into the office is as it was before the closure to the public back in March. Karen Heath said there has not been a major influx of customers since opening the past couple days. "During the closing, we put in a mail slot for people to pay their bills, but there...
While it may not have been a roaring start to a new initiative to keep the Valley clean, New BeCLEANings had a blooming start for spring on Friday morning as Leanna Jones, CEO for the Saratoga/Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce (S/PVCC), Ray and Jamie Bernal, Roger and Wanda Snell, and Kirsten Teubner set out to begin the deep cleaning of Saratoga. "At a glance, it did not look like there was an insurmountable amount of cleaning that needed to be done, just a few weeds here and...
The Platte Valley Healthcare Project (PVHP), through its architect HGFA Architects of Billings, MT, has submitted final plans and drawings for the North Platte Valley Medical Center (NPVMC) to the Wyoming Department of Health. NPVMC will be a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital in Saratoga and will be built under a USDA program to bring healthcare facilities to rural areas of the country. “This is a big step in the approval process and a must-have for our final submission to the USDA,” said Mike Burke, president of HGFA. “We...
The first Thursday in May was designated as the National Day of Prayer by President Harry Truman on April 17, 1952. However, the tradition goes back to President Abraham Lincoln who had established a fall observance along with the official Thanksgiving holiday in 1863. While some may not think it necessary to have a day designated for prayer, studies have shown that about 55% of Americans say they pray every day and another 21% say they pray weekly. (https:...

Over the past several weeks, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has impacted many facets of Americans' way of life. The price of gas has plummeted, unemployment has soared to numbers not seen since the 1930s and the use of food banks in the United States have significantly increased. In Wyoming, the Wyoming Hunger Initiviate, spearheaded by First Lady Jennie Gordon, committed $40,000 to food banks or mobile food pantries in all 23 counties of the state. Here in Saratoga, the Sar...
Much like everything and everyone else over the past two months, the Platte Valley Ministerial Association (PVMA) has had to rethink how to hold the National Day of Prayer. The observance of the National Day of Prayer has its roots in the founding of the United States and was formalized by President Harry S. Truman in 1952. Each year, the President of the United States signs a proclamation urging all Americans to pray on the first Thursday in May. In recent years, the PVMA...
A pair of Osprey have made the nesting platform on Pic Pike Road their home. The couple have been seen soaring around the area for several days. Carbon Power and Light took the initiative to give the Osprey an alternate nest site that is safe, away from power lines. In the past the Boy Scouts also helped with the project. There are quite a few of the platforms in our area. According to Biff Burton, Wyoming Game and Fish Department Game Warden, they are very successful, giving...
On Wednesday, around 2:30 p.m., a semi-truck was cut off by a car near the Sinclair exit going eastbound on Interstate 80 and crashed between the highways. The cab looked like a giant had stomped on it. The car that caused the accident did not stop, but others did immediately. Some of those were Valley residents. Saratoga resident James "Jimmy" Campbell and his wife, Jaimie, were on their way to Rawlins to do some shopping when they witnessed the crash. Jimmy pulled over his...
As the month of April ends, many activities were canceled throughout Carbon County and the nation due to the concern of COVID-19 and adhering to social distancing directives. Even though Easter services were curtailed, a resident in Hanna was determined the kids of this community would get their Easter egg hunt. "An Easter egg hunt is something little kids look forward to every year," Sunshine Solaas, Hanna Basin Museum (HBM) Director and Hanna resident said. "This year, with...
What do all these things have in common? They all help provide pollination, so we have food on our tables. Grocery stores would be rather empty without the hard work of bees, birds, butterflies, bats and other pollinators. Yes, even the wind helps with pollination. About 75 percent of crops are pollinated by animals. That’s a whole different range of foods, from fruits to nuts to vegetables. The USDA estimated that crops dependent on pollination are worth more than $10 billion per year. Despite the importance of p...
Do you want to make history? You already are! The Wyoming State Archives and State Museum, the University of Wyoming American Heritage Center (AHC), and Wyoming State Historical Society are working together to encourage you to consider how you would tell future historians about your experiences and memories of this unusual time. Do you keep a journal or a blog? Have you created your own mask for making essential trips outdoors? Are you creating artworks or craft projects to commemorate or pass the time? Are you talking on Fac...
The Canadian poet Atticus once wrote "We are never alone, We are all wolves, Howling at the same moon." In recent weeks, that simple piece of poetry has taken on a very literal meaning as the streets of Saratoga have been filled with the sounds of howls at the same time every night. Saratoga is not alone in this phenomenon. Throughout Wyoming and throughout the United States, communities are seeing residents go outside and howl at 8 p.m. on a nightly basis. It seems to...
While the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has impacted everything from schools to local business, another aspect of life that has been affected is that of church goers. With the Holy Week having begun on April 5 with Palm Sunday and ending with Easter on April 12, churches everywhere have sought new ways to reach their congregations. One example is that of Pastor Gene Smith of the Platte Valley Christian Church in Saratoga, who has posted a livestream on his Facebook every day as...
