  • Living on Purpose: Fallen but not forgotten

    William F. Holland Jr.|Jun 6, 2024

This week we honor those who died while fighting for our country. There was a time when society seemed to be more sensitive and compassionate about casualties of war, but today there are so many distractions that cause us to not have our priorities in the right order. This day is not about politics or worldviews, it’s about giving the highest respect to those who paid the greatest price. The liberties we are thankful for today did not come without the sacrifice of many brave men and women as freedom does not come without cost. We remember t...

  • All Access Pass

Pastor Vince Vannett, Saratoga Alliance Church|Jun 6, 2024

Summertime is here! At least it feels like it has arrived. Summertime ushers in some specific events and one of those is….waiting in lines. How many of us spend a significant amount of time waiting in line to gain access to rodeos, amusement park rides, concerts, national parks, movies, or whatever activity is scheduled that day? Wouldn’t it be nice to have one of those “VIP” passes where we can just walk right in and have access to all that is behind the gate, door, or curtain? As a VIP we could walk in confidently and boldly knowing we had...

  • Good Food Starts With Healthy Ingredients

    Richard Espinoza|Jun 6, 2024

When eating at a restaurant, people should know what the ingredients are. Julie Lassiter, owner of Juniper’s Fine Dining in Rawlins, said people should know the ingredients in the food that is being served to them. She said everything she cooks at her restaurant is made from scratch. “We serve primarily scratch ingredients,” Lassiter said. “I am still looking for a baker. Everything I make comes from my recipes and I came up with scratch sauces, barbecue, and other homemade foods. What we are do...

  • What is the abundant life Jesus offers?

    Dr. William F. Holland|May 30, 2024

It’s common in this modern age for religious seekers to comb the Bible for passages that promise endless blessings. People love to hear messages about God protecting His children from danger and suffering, and how He wants to give us everything we dream about. The problem is this is not exactly why the Christian life was established. Christians should read and study the Bible daily, while keeping everything in context is critical to understanding more clearly to what God is saying. It’s true that He loves us, but even in His endless com...

  • Be a Peacemaker

    Bob Keel|May 30, 2024

This Memorial Day I find myself reflecting on the people in my life that have passed on. In a newspaper article I cannot say enough to do justice to them. Ultimately, I settle on my grandfathers who served in the Army and the other served in the coast guard during World War II. They had passion about their country and their ability to fight for their freedoms and the freedom of us all. Jehovah in the Old Testament said “He shall say: “Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not panic or be ter...

  • For Those Who Ensured Our Freedom

Owen Acord, Special to the Sun|May 30, 2024

On Monday, many community members came together at the Encampment Cemetery to be a part of a Memorial Day tradition. Memorial Day was first celebrated under the name of Waterloo on May 5, 1866. From there it spread across the nation. On May 5 1868, General John A. Logan created Declaration Day which was to be held on the 30th of May. Then, in 1971, Memorial Day as we know it was made a federal holiday to be held on the last Monday of May. A ceremony, put on by VFW post 1625, was held in honor...

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) announced the opening of both seasonally-closed sections for the summer on May 23. • On Pentecost

    Rev. Canon Bobbe Fitzhugh|May 23, 2024

Pentecost, a Greek word meaning 50, is the 50th day after the Easter Resurrection – a Feast Day celebrated this year on May 19th. Pentecost is the day the “Holy Spirit” entered a room holding Jesus’ apostles and entered each of them, an event which “makes the church the church.” Happy Birthday, Church! Jesus has gone and the disciples are hanging out rather fearfully in the upper room. They have just had a rather tumultuous time – they walked with Jesus for up to three years before he is taken from them on the cross. Now they wait, disappo...

  • Do we love God and ourselves enough to change?

    William F. Holland Jr.|May 23, 2024

I recently read a story about an elderly preacher who was invited each week to speak at a school in Africa and he made a tremendous impact on the children. In every lesson, he would begin and conclude by leading them into confessing the phrases, self-control, self-discipline, and sound mind. One of the young students in these classes is now a man who remembers how they recited these words so much they became a part of their vocabulary. When the children would see him walking down the streets, they would shout, “self-control, self-disciple, a...

  • Sawdust in your blood

    Joshua Wood|May 16, 2024

When Saratoga Forest Management first began operations in 2012—operating the sawmill once owned by Louisiana Pacific—it was big news for two reasons. First, the sawmill had been closed since 2003 dealing a major blow to the local economy. Second, Saratoga Forest Management was processing the abundance of beetle-killed lodgepole pine. When newspapers descended upon Saratoga to report the news of the sawmill reopening, one of the people they spoke with was Orville Howe. Howe and eight of his broth...
