Hospice is intended to provide comfort and support to patients at the end of their life so that they can experience their remaining time in the best ways possible. Experts say that unfortunately, misconceptions about hospice often lead people to make uninformed decisions at a critical, complex juncture in their lives. “There is often an idea that hospice equates to giving up. But hospice is actually about taking control,” says Paul Mastrapa, president and chief executive officer of Interim HealthCare Inc. “It’s the job of the hospice team to...

This caboose was built about 1890 on the East Coast. It was purchased by the S&E RR in 1903 and served on that line from 1908 until 1928 when it was abandoned on a side track in Encampment. Eventually, it was moved to a residence in Riverside, Wyo., and used as storage and a workshop. In 2014, the Caboose was moved to the GEM grounds. Over the years the unit has been renovated, the roof sealed, siding painted and replaced as necessary and a deck built in the fall of 2016. Exhibit and...
The results of a new survey from Sensormatic Solutions, a leading retail solutions provider of Johnson Controls, show that despite new shopping options popularized during the pandemic, such as buy-online-pick-up-in-stores (BOPIS), 79% of respondents plan to conduct their back-to-school shopping in stores this year, a slight increase from 2022. The most important factors when shopping in-store include price (91%), product availability (75%) and a safe and comfortable store environment (44%)....
CASPER — About a dozen people spoke at a Rock Springs meeting earlier this month about a historic rate hike proposal brought by Rocky Mountain Power — Wyoming’s largest electricity provider. Though more than 70% of Rocky Mountain Power’s customer base consists of industrial users, most of the people who spoke at the public hearing were typical residential customers and community members who fear the impact these cost increases could have on their lives. Rock Springs Mayor Max Nicholson said the rate increases could threaten lives; those w...
The valley saw a lot of visitors this past week for various events along with the normal tourism for this time of year. Even with the extra traffic in the area Chief Morris said that the ticketing and violations did not see an increase and was fairly mellow, considering. The Hobo Hot Pool saw a large increase in visitors during the week with most diligently following the guidelines. Morris said that the funds for the new SPD vehicles had been appropriated and was waiting for approval. The plan is to obtain up to two used vehicles to be...

Since the invention of the combustible engine, it’s been common for people to compete to brag about their equipment. During Prohibition, moonshiners created the model for NASCAR by racing their vehicles along county roads. In farm country, it was less about speed and more about strength. To show the strength of their tractors, farmers would compete in power pulls or tractor pulls. The concept is fairly simple: a tractor is hooked to a sled with a set amount of weight. The sled can be in two diff...
What is the Reality behind the Truth? James 3: 8-10 8But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. What is the reality behind the truth? Most people today would like to find out what is really real in contrast to what is counterfeit, plastic, hollow, shallow, or empty. Some will define this reality in...
LARAMIE — Four years ago, Manufacturing Works, Wyoming’s extension of a national manufacturing partnership network, was one of the poorest performing centers in the country, according to Center Director Rocky Case. Today, a recent national achievement distinguished the center as one of the roughly top 20% of performing manufacturing centers in the United States. Manufacturing Works is a collaborative program with the University of Wyoming that provides a variety of services to manufacturing programs across the state. According to Steve Far...
Full skirts swish across the lawn, the whirr of a spinning wheel and the whine of a fiddle bounce off the log buildings, all of this adding to the atmosphere that takes the visitor back to a time when human beings worked with their hands, and their heads to build a life in the wilds of Wyoming. Reenacting historical events and experiencing history hands-on is a terrific way to spend the day. Stepping back into the 19th century, nearly 200 years ago can be eye-opening. Volunteers dress in period...
Whether writing stories for money, love or entertainment, the six professional writers that sat at a small table in the Grand Encampment Museum on June 28 all shared one common thread, the Rocky Mountains. Some had been in the North Platte Valley their entire lives, while others visited and fell in love with the history and legends that echo across the mountains and valleys from days gone by. While every author has a slightly different motive for writing, they all seem to be compelled to tell...

On June 24, Encampment became the 12th location in the state of Wyoming to host a Blue Star Memorial Marker. In doing so, the Encampment Dirt Diggers Club continued a tradition which has carried on since 1945. As representatives of VFW 6125 presented the Colors to mark the beginning of the dedication ceremony for the Blue Star Memorial Marker, the choir sang The Star Spangled Banner. The Encampment Community Choir sang a moving rendition of "Salute to the Armed Forces" bringing servicemen and...

Local historian Dick Perue has held a life-long goal of preserving local history, one picture at a time. That goal is now paying off for the Grand Encampment Museum. Monday, the former Saratoga Sun publisher will be donating two rare printing plates. The donation will be made during a program presented by historian and author Mike Amundson as he presents the art and life of pioneer artist M.D. Houghton. The engravings were used to print the Houghton images of the 1903 Grand Encampment Mining Dis...
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management proposes to change how it manages millions of acres across the nation — and in Wyoming — by reestablishing conservation as an equal priority in its “multiple use” doctrine, according to the agency. The Conservation and Landscape Health draft rule recognizes that drought, wildfires and other mounting pressures require a shift in how BLM lands are managed, the agency said. “As pressure on our public lands continues to grow, the proposed Public Lands Rule provides a path for the BLM to better focus on the healt...
Over the past few weeks, a young bull moose has seemingly made itself at home in Saratoga as it has foraged around the community. Contrary to the popular children's book-which posits that if you give a moose a muffin it will inevitably want some jam-it is best to give the large animal as much space as possible. According to Teal Cufaude, wildlife biologist with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, it is common for moose to arrive in Saratoga due to its proximity to the Upper North Platte River....

In the fall of 2022 Wyoming Game and Fish applied 14,000 pounds of rotenone to the Saratoga lake. When they took samples from the lake in October, there were no fish according to the biologists, and they called the project complete. Along with killing illegally introduced yellow perch, the pesticide also eliminated thousands of white suckers and invasive brook sticklebacks. Rotenone is non-selective so it killed off all the trout in the lake which accounted for about 20 percent of the dead...
