1 years ago November 27, 1919 Good Times Coming It has been many years since the streets of Saratoga have been so cluttered up with piles of brick, cement, lumber and other building materials as during the last few weeks, and the indications are indeed good for an era of unusual prosperity in this section of the county. If we may judge by the amount of building now in progress and contemplated, and the number of transfers of farm and city property during the past few months. Practically every residence in town which could...
When one of my best friends got married, she ran into an issue with the wedding cake of all things. Picking a cake should be one of the fun experiences when planning your wedding but it wasn’t for my friend. She discovered that there wasn’t a baker in the area where she lives who specialized in baking for celiacs who are also lactose intolerant. The bakeries who were willing to make a special recipe were going to charge nearly three times the price of a typical wedding cak...

1 Years Ago November 13, 1919 Warriors In Gay Uniforms Soldiers of Uncle Sam in Samoa Make Picturesque Appearance On Parade Ground The Fita-Fitas, or native soldiers of American Samoa, are considered the most picturesque of all the American Army. That country is under the control of the navy department and the naval officers of Pago Pago from the governing body of Tutilla and the five other small islands. The yeomen among the bluejackets are valuable office assistants. The Fita-Fitas are the outside unit. Their duties are...
Assistant Principal Zack Schmidt of Saratoga High School opened the special assembly to honor our Veterans by reminding students why we celebrate Veterans Day. He stated, "Today it is our privilege to say thank you to all American Veterans and let them know we appreciate them for their service, honor and sacrifice. The price of freedom is high, we cannot afford to forget those who are willing to pay. Today we celebrate America's Veterans for keeping this nation the land of...

Staff Report What if you were told an hour of your time could change someone’s life? In the time it takes you to read this article, nearly 100 people will receive lifesaving blood transfusions. By taking just an hour or so to donate, you will do something wonderful! Here, in the southern part of Wyoming, it takes 500 people a week to donate blood to serve the 47 area hospitals in this region! One out of every three people will need blood during their lives, but only one in 20 people regularly give blood. Saratoga’s next blood...
For the past several months, local historians Dick and John Perue have been going through the process of digitizing multiple historic collections. As was reported previously (see “Hold Onto Your Hat-we’re going digital” on page 16 of the Feb. 13 Saratoga Sun), the project began as a process to save the ever expanding collection owned by Dick Perue and were handed down to him by R.I Martin and R.D. Martin, former owners of the Saratoga Sun. Since then, a number of people have stepped forward to contribute their own histo...
1 Years Ago October 30, 1919 Work Started On Another Garage A number of men are now at work clearing away the old buildings which have occupied the “Cluff corner” in Saratoga for the past twenty or more years, and this corner will soon be occupied by an up-to-date concrete garage building, to be erected by Harvey and Sjoden, who have been engaged in the blacksmith and automobile repair business here for several years past, but in small and inadequate quarters. Their business lately has grown to much proportions that the...
Ask most people about their favorite holiday and they may have to give it a little bit of thought. When it comes to Amanda Lane, however, she barely needs to give it a second thought. For Lane, no holiday comes close to Halloween. "It is my favorite holiday," said Lane. Around the month of October, Lane often stands out, but she isn't hard to find during the rest of the year, either. She'll be the one who is wearing a flower or some other sort of decoration in her curly...
I enjoy tent camping more than a lot people I know but there are times when I would like to head out into the woods and it is a little too cold. I was reading a magazine one day and found the perfect solution, a do-it-yourself mini-camper. I thought this was a great idea since I didn't own a camper at the time. There was one exception though, the one they made in the magazine was held together with glue! I thought, "I can do that but make it a little more sturdy for climates t...

The end of Summer/beginning of Fall is a great time to get fresh fruits and vegetables, either from Farmer Markets or picking them yourself. It is always wonderful to have canned your own and filled the pantry for winter. I am fortunate enough to have a few chokecherry trees in the back yard. This year I decided to pick them before the birds could eat them all. Chokeherries have a bitter sweet flavor. I don’t recommend eating them by the handful, your mouth will pucker. Chokec...
“Kassidy, come check out this bathroom!” says Patty as she’s walking towards me, pointing to the bathroom. I thought this was a little funny because who wants a visitor to go see a bathroom? Once I walked in I realized why she wanted me to see the wonders of the Sagebrush Senior Center bathroom. You walk through the doors into a forest of aspen trees, like a trip down Aspen Alley. Directly in front of the door is two color changed aspen trees with a mama bear and two cubs hugging the tree in the center. Once you move your eye...
Look for Witches, Goblins, Ghouls and a few Princesses to be walking the streets of Saratoga! For a safe and convenient way to trick-or-treat, parents, preschool and elementary-aged kids can come to downtown Saratoga on Thursday, October 31 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Many businesses will join in the fun by handing out treats and maybe some tricks, too. Look for the bright orange sign on the door or window of the participating businesses. Businesses wishing to participate in the Halloween Walk are invited to register online or call...

"What's sad for me is the fact that, about half a dozen years ago, I told the bishop I'll stay here until nobody comes and the doors are locked. Guess what? Kind of a bad day for me." On Sept. 22, nearly 3,500 people attended the first Wyoming sermon of popular artist Kanye West at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody. That same day, nearly 300 miles to the southeast, Reverend Arlen Rounds bore both smiles and tears as he gave what was likely the last sermon at St....
The Hanna Basin Museum held a dedication ceremony for its newest building on Wednesday. The Victor G. Anderson Memorial building dedication had over 100 attendees to honor Anderson for his tireless work in saving history of Carbon County. It is the largest of the three buildings on the museum's grounds and was finished in the summer of 2018, although it was not ready for showing exhibitions. The naming of the building was kept a secret from his wife Nancy. She came to the cere...

Eating per doctor's instructions is not easy when you are a diabetic heart patient. In helping a family member shop for groceries, I realized we were spending a lot of time reading labels in an effort to find products that fit within the prescribed diet. It was taking too long. We got a lot of strange looks from other shoppers and store clerks. Most grocery items had too much sodium and/or added sugar. The amount of each you can have per day depends on the diet your doctor...
For people who have thought about learning a new language, there will soon be an opportunity to learn one. Pastor Randolph Schnack will be starting a class on Biblical Hebrew at the Lutheran church in Saratoga on Sept. 27 and is offering an open invitation. “I tell this to just about anybody,” said Schnack. “Any class they want, if you can get five or six people together that would want to have it, I’ll go ahead and teach it and I’m not charging anything.” This offer alrea...
It is September and Carbon County elementary students are not only in school learning lessons, but also at an outdoor classroom in Elk Mountain taught by Kay Grant. Grant has been educating students on life of the early pioneers and the Plains Indians culture for 14 years. She does this in a variety of ways, from using actual stone instruments used in day-to-day life to games and toys the children played with. She has a buffalo hide that has been on display for its 11th year,...
The newest building at the Hanna Basin Museum is opening officially to the public from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 25. It is the largest of the three buildings on the museum's grounds. Unlike the two other buildings that are a part of the museum, it was constructed in this century. The first building to house the Hanna Basin Museum was the Hanna Community Hall, also known as Linden Hall it was built in 1890 in Hanna as a saloon by its proprietor, John Linden, to serve...
