1 Years Ago Sept. 17, 1914 Well, we had a fine summer. Crops have been good and the farmer and rancher both wear smiles “that isn’t going to be pulled off with a donkey.” The weather was especially fine until Saturday afternoon, when it went democratic and remained with us a few days. However, this may clear up the situation until late in the fall. Like all democratic conditions, there is generally a long republican spell after the shock. The next snow will arrive somewhere between the 2nd and the 7th of November, 1914,...

Locomotive at the Ferris Haggarty One of the greatest money savers inaugurated in the recent improvements at the Ferris-Haggarty mine is the locomotive. It is a Porter air type that traverses the tunnel level over a length of 1,300 feet. The locomotive pulls a train of ten two-ton cars, landing the ore in the ore bin where it is d...
1 Years Ago Aug. 20, 1914 It is one great big cinch, that if the people of the eastern part of Carbon county keep on getting it handed to them in the campaigns (political) they can probably get the county cut in two. From all we have heard since Tuesday, there is apt to be something doing at the November election to a few pets. Funny thing how half of a county gets two or three officers, while the other half gets ten or twelve. The primary is over and little accomplished by the small vote, which could have been disposed of...
More than 80 quilts will be displayed at the Pieces of History Quilt Show Friday and Saturday at the Platte Valley Community Center. The quilt show is sponsored by the Saratoga Museum and includes many quilts made by people in the Platte Valley. One of the oldest quilts to be displayed is from 1895, Saratoga Museum Director Virginia Parker said. "The quilts are different from last year," Parker said. "We have a lot of hand-sewn quilts locally made. It should be an interesting...
Saratoga may be home to the rebirth of the atlatl and a world-wide competition. What is an atlatl you ask? An atlatl is a device used to throw a spear, commonly called a dart, much farther and more accurately than a human can unaided. An atlatl is usually constructed from a stick or slat with a hook on one end and a handle on the other. If it were explained by your high school physics teacher, they would describe it as creating an extra lever on your arm, thus increasing the...
Editor’s note: This is the second in a series about the journey to write “The Legends of Old Baldy.” Carole Ward, a researcher for the “Legends of Old Baldy”, said she is not a writer, but when she was approached about the book, she felt it was important enough to pursue. Around 20 members at the Old Baldy Club showed an interest and Ward said she thought she could delegate some of the work. Her husband Bill was suffering from health issues, and they weren’t able to tackle a...
