It has been 75 years since Betty (Everist) Vyvey graduated from high school. She attended Platte Valley High School in Saratoga and graduated in 1940. Vyvey was born in a homestead cabin in southern Colorado. The closest school to their home in Colorado was more than 20 miles away. There were no school buses at that time, leaving only horses and her own two feet as options for getting to school. The facility’s Activity Program is based on residents’ interests and allows residents to achieve a greater level of self-esteem which enables them to perform their activities of daily living at a higher level. Saratoga Elementary School won a grant in October for a hydroponic system, and recently, the school reaped the ultimate reward — eating what they grew. A hydroponic system, according to Adelaide Myers, library aide at Saratoga Elementary, is a medium to grow plants that doesn’t use soil. The Platte Valley Kiwanis celebrated their 25th anniversary May 19. The Kiwanis was formed May 18, 1990. Connie McGuire and Bill Rathbun are charter members of Kiwanis, and treasurer Wanda Eberg has been with Kiwanis for 23 years. Eberg has served as the treasurer since joining. As of June 1, 2015, Health Management Services (HMS), a Montana-based corporation, took over this facility. It has a three-year lease with an option to buy. Since HMS already has another facility named Valley View Nursing Home, we are now Saratoga Care Center. We expect most of the residents who left the facility for other places to return, many of them during the week beginning June 1st. Happy days are here again.
