Rowdy Alameda, fifth grader at Saratoga Elementary School, qualified to compete in the state-level competition for the National Geographic Bee. Alameda won the school-level competition at Saratoga Elementary School, which qualified him for the state-level. He is the only student from Carbon County who will be competing at state. The Saratoga Lions Club is hosting the 36th annual Donald E. Erickson Memorial Chariot Races, the state championships, in Saratoga this year. Traditionally held President's Day weekend, this year's Chariot Races were moved to correspond with the state racing association finals to be hosted in Saratoga. The Hotel Wolf is hosting The Saratoga Lions Club's annual Calcutta auction Friday night for the state championship races and the 36th Annual Donald E. Erickson Memorial Chariot races this weekend. The Calcutta-style betting, which auctions teams off to the highest bidder, is the primary way the Lions Club raises funds for the chariot races and other activities throughout the year. This weekend, during the Chariot Races, youth will have the chance to compete in their own event - and adults can bet on it. The second annual Kirsten Campbell Kids race will be held during the middle of the Calcutta on Sunday; which, begins as 11 a.m. According to Michelle Olguin, organizer of the event, the race was started last year in memory of Kirsten Campbell, who passed away in 2014 of cancer. Ashlynn Johnson, of Encampment, won the Junior Division at the state Make it with Wool (MIWW) contest Nov. 31, 2015, modeling a gray fit-and-flare coat with machine embroidery and a magenta/gray plaid vest and skirt. The Valley Service Organization is hosting the Snowshoe Shuffle, Tuesday night snowshoe hike events, again this year after they gained popularity last year. According to a press release, the hikes are different each week and are followed by a short visit to a different bar or restaurant for snacks and refreshments. The winning fish wasn't the biggest fish that has come out of Saratoga Lake, but with a score of 35, it was the winner for this year. Tammy Guerra, of Parker, Colo., could be the first woman in the 33-year history of the fishing derby to win the tournament.
