  • Clinic visits important

    Staff Report|Sep 2, 2020

If you’ve been putting off seeing the doctor for needed medical care, Heidi Sifford, practice manager of the Platte Valley Clinic, wants you to know you might be endangering your health more by staying away than by coming in. If patients feel uncomfortable about coming into the clinic, they’re encouraged to use the telehealth service, which is still being covered by insurance companies. “We can do much so much through that,” Sifford said, “and people don’t even have to leave their homes.” Sifford said the process is easy because clinic staff...

  • Some Elk Mountain magic

    Mike Armstrong|Sep 2, 2020

The Elk Mountain Hotel was built in 1905 and, in its day, has also been known as the John S. Evans Hotel, Mountain View Hotel and Grandview Hotel. No matter its name, the restored Victorian inspired facility that is set next to the bank of the Medicine Bow River is a beautiful property. The two story wood frame building was constructed next to the Garden Spot Pavilion, a dance hall that was a social center in what would be considered, by most, a remote part of Wyoming. The Garden Spot Pavilion...

  • Hugs for help

    Mike Armstrong|Aug 19, 2020

A thrift shop located in the basement of St. Joseph's Catholic Church is the newest business in Hanna. The Catholic church has had thrift shops in its basement over the years, and they were run by volunteers of the church, but it had been hard for St. Joseph's to maintain the store with staff and it had to close. Sondra Clemens, who recently moved to Hanna, decided to change that. On August 3, she opened her doors to the public. Clemens named it Aaron and Bentley Hugs after her son and...

    Joshua Wood|Aug 12, 2020

Koyoty Sports and Trophy Room Taxidermy (Koyoty Sports) in Saratoga recently celebrated their 5th year in business with their annual Koyoty Howl and, if attendance at the event was any indication, the sporting goods store has plenty of celebrations ahead. Co-owner Warden Patzer said that, over the weekend of July 25, he estimated approximately 2,000 people visited his store. Each year, Patzer offers a number of deals on his stock and brings in vendors to talk with patrons. In December 2015, Koyo...

  • A delayed toast to 25

    Joshua Wood|Aug 12, 2020

For the first time since 1996, the annual Steinley Cup Microbrew and Competition will not take place in Saratoga. The competition, which would have celebrated its 25th year this summer, is just another seasonal event that has fallen victim to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Leanna Jones, Saratoga/Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce (S/PVCC) CEO, stated that the decision was a hard one for the S/PVCC Board of Directors. “It was not an easy ‘no’ by any means. They went back and forth trying to sha...

  • Cornering the market

    Mike Armstrong|Jul 29, 2020

Opening a restaurant is a risk at any time. To open during a time when many venues throughout the country are having to close, an owner has to have a lot of confidence in their food and the public. Laurie Schnabel is doing just that. Schnabel opened the Corner Cafe on 1007 Jade Drive in Hanna about a month ago and is finding success. Her business model happens to be focused on more of a to-go operation, although there is a dine-in option. "Opening during COVID hasn't been that stressful because...
