  • At wit's, and friend's, end

    Jun 14, 2017

After a very hectic Memorial Day Weekend where we covered everything from teacher retirement parties, open houses, graduations and the many Memorial Day Services in east county I showed up to work Monday to try to sort through the depressingly large array of photos and stories at hand. Needless to say, I was very tired to start with as I started to figure out where everything would go. About 30 minutes into Memorial Day I got a phone call from a friend I don’t hear from that often. I was happy to hear from Chris until I caught the tone in h...

  • Finding flying fun

    May 24, 2017

Josh Craig says he and his friends have always wanted to give back to the community they grew up in. Mother Mountain Anglers (MMA) club was founded with this concept in mind. MMA is a non-profit that started out as a fishing club, but disc golf has taken over in subject when the club meets. How did this happen? Two years ago Margaret Weber, who was a Riverside council member at the time, approached Craig about the feasibility of setting up a disc golf course in Riverside park. Riverside funded the nine hole project and disc golf came to Carbon...

Nearly 20 members of the public were in attendance, not including USFS employees and members of the news media. Of members of the public who spoke, several were in favor of annexing the USFS property, but several others were opposed, some citing a failure by the town to address existing sewer issues that could be exacerbated by a...

This allegation was in direct contrast to effusive praise offered by another Saratoga...

  • Zoning officer & alerts

    Apr 26, 2017

After going through routine business on the agenda, the Saratoga Town Council stopped to discuss Dan Ferrin, the new zoning officer hired by the town, and the impacts the position will have. Council members hope filling the position—which went unfilled for several months—will mitigate or eliminate the sorts of conflicts that recently erupted over a Colorado-based contractor beginning a new building without receiving proper clearance from the Saratoga Water and Sewer Joint Powers Board (sewer board) and others. The new part time zoning off...

  • An argument against annexation

    Apr 26, 2017

Dear Editor, I would like to share some serious concerns about the proposed annexation in front of the present Town Council and being discussed by the Saratoga Planning Commission. To begin with I would like to express my support for the annexation of the U.S. Forest Service because I believe that this will have a very minor effect on this community because the majority of the employees that work at this facility are residents of the town of Saratoga so are already part of the equation for factoring in the load on the waste treatment plant. My...

Raymer Construction of Saratoga, approached the board at the meeting to bring attention to a home being constructed at 13th and Walnut Streets in the southwest corner of town. Raymer wa...

  • Hanna rec center gets new direction

    Mike Armstrong|Apr 19, 2017

Vivian Gonzales, former town clerk for Hanna is now the acting Hanna Recreation and Park Director. The Hanna Recreation Center was in flux for several months when Jerry Leturgey resigned as director. Several candidates were considered over the months, but none were the right fit for the job. The olympic size pool was closed during this time, because no one at the center had a pool operator certificate and lifeguard credentials. This was disappointing to many seniors who did water aerobics in...

The council then voted to accept changes to ordinances that would increase the sewer tap fees. The Saratoga Garden Board met Monday to discuss plans for the approaching growing season, as well as efforts to separate itself from the Town of Saratoga. At the Monday meeting, the board discussed joining the Saratoga HUB, a nonprofit associated with the Boys’ and Girls’ Club, a 501(c)(3). The HUB had expressed interest in helping the garden board, according to garden board members. The garden board relied on the town of Saratoga to be its financial agent for a sizable USDA grant, but late last year a controversy erupted after allegations of f...

Stacy Crimmins, CEO of the Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce, told members of the Saratoga Town Council Tuesday that innkeepers in Saratoga have been reporting since fall that they are about 95 percent booked that weekend due to the wedding and the memorial service, meaning many loyal visitors to the event might ha...

  • Garden board gets past dirt

    Mar 29, 2017

A controversy that has been simmering between the Saratoga Community Garden Board and the Saratoga Town Council may be on its way to an amicable solution after a recent discussion between Garden Board member Steve Deorio and members of the Saratoga Town Council last week. For weeks, the Garden Board and Town Council members struggled to come to accord and find a way to spin the garden board off into a self-managing nonprofit. The issue began late last year during a town council meeting where council member Will Faust suggested the garden be...

  • Growing in a new direction

    FW Broschart|Feb 22, 2017

The Saratoga Community Garden, at its Monday meeting, discussed the process for the group to become a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit as well as preparations for the upcoming growing season. As a non-profit, the community garden would then manage its own funds and grants without relying on the town of Saratoga to act as a custodian of funds. The move to convert the group to a nonprofit group came after a controversial two months that saw members of the garden board pitted against town council members. In December, town council member Will Faust raised...
