In addition, Mr. Bartlett said he would have the park cleaned up and...

  • Town tackles budget

    Zachary Laux|May 1, 2013

The overall budgetary goal of the town of Saratoga is to sustain what it already has. Elder said the town of Saratoga won’t have a solid number on how much will be in the budget until the Saratoga Town Council conducts the first reading of the budget on May 22. Editor: How great is it that Saratoga was chosen as one America’s Top 12 Small-Town Art Places? The award was based on the number of resident artists, artist-related businesses and non-profits receiving funds for the arts and music. Also on the top twelve list was Marfa, Texas, a similar town of 2000, with antelope and cattlemen. CBS’s 60 Minutes highlighted Marfa (www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50144819n), and they interviewed a bemused cattle rancher, their happy mayor who called it a “freedom loving town. People are allowed to — just-ah...

Bob Thrasher, who was recently appointed to the Planning Commission, sat silently while the audience and other commission members traded verbal jabs concerning the matter of appointments and Chairperson Bev Hempel’s presence at the meeting. “Right now, you are not officially on the board, Saratoga resident Glee Johnson told Hempel in the April 9 meeting. You have not been reappoin...

  • Politics, ranch sales and delinquent water bills

    Apr 10, 2013

1 years ago April 3, 1913 Freak Game Law Here are a few of the items contained in the game laws as gotten by what is supposed to have been the most intelligent men in the Twelfth Wyoming legislature. Just where all the members were or what was on their minds that they let this get by is beyond our conception of able men to represent this state. One deer with horns can be killed from October 1st to 31st in any county in the state. You can’t fish within 100 feet of any dam across any stream in the state. You can’t shoot into private land fro...

The town will begin to advertise the position on the Planning Commission after the next council meeting, giving people who applied last time a second chance to get on the commission. In the last Saratoga Town Council meeting, Zeige...

    Mar 27, 2013

1 years ago March 27, 1913 Looks Like Big Year Judging from all indications this valley will be more prosperous this year than for several years. We are not handing out a bunch of hot air, either. There is certain matters taking place that lead us to believe that we are going to have a better business than is usual. While things have been a little quiet as a whole, this town and valley have suffered less than nearly every community that we have had reports from. Business has been good, although we would like to have seen twice as many men...

  • Town looks at board appointment procedures

    Zachary Laux|Mar 13, 2013

Councilman Steve Wilcoxson kicked off the March 5 Saratoga Town Council meeting with comments about how appointments are made on different boards. “In my logical mind what should take place is the mayor will nominate whoever he wants for the appointment and that’s up to us to take and discuss whether that person is the one we want to fill the vacancy,” Wilcoxson said. • Newspapers are community gateways

    Zachary Laux|Mar 6, 2013

I want to kick off my first column by introducing myself. I am the newest reporter for the Saratoga Sun assigned to cover Carbon County School District No. 2 and the town of Saratoga – not an easy task, although I feel I will find most of my stories enjoyable to report on and write about. I have only been at the Saratoga Sun for a few days, but I have already met some real rich characters, all of them incredibly nice. I can’t wait to start digging into this community and find what kind of new...

  • Diligence required for board members

    Mar 6, 2013

Editor: I would like to comment on what was described by Zach (Saratoga Sun reporter Zachary Laux) as a controversy on the Planning Commission. The alleged controversy is directed towards a single member of the Commission and not the Commission as a whole. It has been questioned as to if Bev Hempel had been officially re-appointed by the council to the Planning Commission. We are researching the minutes so we can get a correct answer to the question. If we find that we haven’t reappointed her, then the Mayor’s re-appointment of her can be ratif...

  • Town website leads to board confusion

    Zachary Laux|Mar 6, 2013

Bev Hempel remembers being reappointed to the Saratoga Planning Commission, but does not remember when. “I don’t remember details of my re-appointment other than it happened,” Hempel, Chairman of the Saratoga Planning Commission said in an email. “That was about the time my husband died after a long illness, and the focus of my memory from that time is not the specifics of my re-appointment to the Planning Commission. If there was some mistake made, it certainly was not intentional.” There cou...
