Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School Principal Steve Priest and Hanna Elementary School Principal Jason Greenway provided updates to the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) Board of Trustees at their February 19 meeting on issues of subsidence surrounding their respective schools. Hanna Elementary School and the football field at HEM both sit above Mine No. 4, which was closed and filled with a sand slurry in the 1980s. Over the past 30 years, however, that sand slurry had...

  • Your right to know is at stake

    Saratoga Sun Editorial|Feb 19, 2020

Much like a bad penny, attempts by the Wyoming Legislature to remove public notices from the pages of Wyoming newspapers, and leading to less informed constituents, have returned. Despite the failure of three similar bills last year, these bills—HB0050, HB0051 and HB0052—would amend Wyoming State Statute to where the only notice required would be on the state procurement website. On Friday, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved these three bills. These pieces of legislation, having now passed the House, will go onto the Sen... Full story

  • Weather wrecks wrestling again

    Mike Armstrong|Feb 12, 2020

Old man winter just kept on disrupting the schedule for the two wrestling teams in Carbon County School District No. 2. This past week the wrestling teams of Saratoga High School Panthers and the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Miners were forced to cancel the tournament in Rawlins this week. This is the third wrestling event that has been canceled due to weather. So far no wrestling events have taken place in February for either Carbon County school team. The Rumble in Rawlins had...

  • The Larger Than Life Personality

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 29, 2020

I was a tyke when I first started watching Jonny Quest. For those who don’t know this cartoon (which I think is near impossible) it came on TV in 1964. It was not the first time a cartoon was in prime time, but it was the first attempt at being for both kids and adults. Jonny Quest was a preteen who had a super scientist for a father, a body guard named Race who was cooler than James Bond, a best friend named Hadji who was from India that lived with the family and a pug pup called Bandit. Consid... Full story

    Joshua Wood|Jan 15, 2020

For the 4th year in a row, the non-profit group Mother Mountain Anglers (MMA) held their annual Kids' Ice Fishing Clinic on January 11. With a cloudy sky Saturday morning, a departure from previous years, the number of people in attendance at first appeared to be low. Shortly before the starting time of 9 a.m., however, trucks and cars descended towards Treasure Island Pond. This marked the second consecutive year that MMA held their clinic on Silver Spur property. After the young anglers were...

  • Questioning the Perkins grant

    Joshua Wood|Jan 1, 2020

“I really think this is a huge sink of my time and , considering the amount of money and considering what I was hired for, I do not think this is the most effective use of my time.” During the December 16 meeting of the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) Board of Trustees, CCSD2 Curriculum Director Noel Manning advised the board against applying for the Perkins V Grant for the upcoming school year. • An appropriate response

    Saratoga Sun Editorial|Dec 11, 2019

We at the Saratoga Sun would like to applaud Hanna Marshal Jeff Neimark and extend to him our gratitude. Last week, the Sun reported on an incident that took place in Medicine Bow involving an armed suspect. For approximately 20 years, this small town at the intersection of Carbon, Natrona and Albany counties has been without local law enforcement and has relied upon the Carbon County Sheriff’s Department. While they are attempting to get a law enforcement program started again, Medicine Bow is left unprepared for situations such as the one t... Full story

  • The Coach truly makes a difference

    Mike Armstrong|Nov 27, 2019

One of the strongest benefits I continue to get from my job as a Saratoga Sun reporter is covering sports teams in Carbon County School District No 2 (CCSD2). Living in Hanna, I am the guy who covers all the teams at Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School, and there is a definite attachment to the kids there as I watch them from the sidelines. The same is true for a few of the Saratoga teams I cover, such as football and wrestling. Going to Laramie this past week and watching HEM... Full story

When the State Championship was won in 2016, Reid Schroeder come home as...

  • Wouldn't change a thing

    Joshua Wood|Nov 6, 2019

"I went to Phu Cat for two weeks of training and that was kind of exciting because I did something really dumb. I was out at my end of the Qui Nhon and it was during the Tet Offensive and the bus was five hours out taking us to Phu Cat, whoever was going that direction. Being young and bulletproof, I stuck my thumb out and hitchhiked ... to Phu Cat." Steve Flauding has lived in the Valley for 41 years. In that time he has worked a variety of jobs. He went from being a troubleshooter for Carbon C...

    Joshua Wood|Oct 16, 2019

"I'm just thankful I get to be a part of the start of this. I don't get to be here next year, but I honestly don't care at all. It doesn't bother me at all. I just love being a part of this, starting a new tradition." Dayne Anderson is one of two seniors playing football for the Encampment Tigers this year. This is also the first year in nearly three decades that Encampment has had a football team to call its own. For three years, between 1988 and 1990, Encampment had a team, but low turnout...

  • What it takes to call Wyoming home

    Joshua Wood|Oct 9, 2019

This past weekend was one of those rare times when there wasn’t an event that I needed to cover nor were there any home games. With that in mind, and my birthday on Monday, my family and I decided to head out of town. Whenever we get a chance to take a road trip, Telitha and I often end up talking about the various towns one finds along the way. Some of them, like Jeffrey City and Bosler, are essentially ghost towns. Others, like Bairoil and Medicine Bow, continue on. Before moving to S... Full story

  • What happened to The Hub?

    Joshua Wood|Sep 18, 2019

It was not an uncommon sight to see bicycles parked at 106 W. Bridge Avenue in Saratoga throughout the summer, after school and on Fridays. Since 2009 the location had served as the home of The Hub and was operated by the Greater Wyoming Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS), which has six locations throughout the greater Wyoming area and serves most of the state. Despite a decade of serving the Saratoga community, the doors of The Hub have closed just as the school year has begun. "We first started...
