There are seniors even in danger of not being able to have graduation ceremonies in some states. This past Friday, Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) joined the country in paying tribute to the students...

  • Finding the silver lining

    Joshua Wood|Apr 8, 2020

It can be all too easy, in times like this, to focus on the negative. I’ve been guilty of it myself, especially as I watch the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the state tick up nearly every hour. It hit me over the weekend, also, that I would have normally spent the weekend covering the 13th Annual Wyoming Open and that this week’s paper would have a list of all the various Easter events in eastern Carbon County. When thinking about what has changed, and what is cha... Full story

  • "It's about helping others"

    Joshua Wood|Apr 1, 2020

by Joshua Wood Even before the arrival of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Wyoming forced the closure of multiple businesses in the Valley, a wave of support was beginning to form. As small businesses took a hit, posts on social media were encouraging people to purchase gift cards from those that would eventually be forced to close their doors. That is exactly what Scott Bokelman, industrial technology teacher at Saratoga Middle/High School (SMHS), decided to do. "I just actually saw a post...

  • Making junior disc golfers

    Joshua Wood|Apr 1, 2020

Between the time that school in Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) was cancelled and the time that Governor Mark Gordon issued a public health order prohibiting gatherings of 10 or more people, there was a brief sliver of time in which Valley children were able to learn about the game of disc golf. In the days following the closure of schools within the district, Encampment resident Shannon Fagan-Craig quickly put out a call to parents in the area. With school no longer an option,...

  • The rapid pace of change

    Joshua Wood|Mar 25, 2020

Are you feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment with everything that’s been going on recently? Well, you’re not alone. When I left the office on March 13, I probably should’ve taken the hint that it was Friday the 13th. The biggest thing on my mind was finishing up an article on the workshop held by the Town of Saratoga with James Childress and auditors from Carver, Florek and James. In a 48-hour period, that all changed. While the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, was on my radar as cases were...

  • A screeching halt to track

    Joshua Wood|Mar 18, 2020

With the leaping forward of an hour and the eventual arrival of spring, 1A and 2A schools were preparing to trade the hardwood for the track and field as they prepared for spring sports. Unfortunately, things developed very quickly in the terms of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and that green light is stuck on red. Last week, the Wyoming High School Athletics Association (WHSAA) issued a press release announcing the suspension of all statewide extracurricular activities from March 16 to March...

    Mike Armstrong|Mar 4, 2020

Governor Mark Gordon has said he will be signing only one tax bill that comes to his desk. That is House Bill 134, also known as the Five Percent Lodging Tax. Once it’s signed into law, House Bill 134 will set a tax rate of five percent on all lodging in Wyoming, including short term rentals like those on AirBnB. It will allow for an additional county specific two percent tax, on top of the five percent, for a total of seven percent if voters in a county choose it. This would amount to a t...
