Pinching pennies: School board and community committee take close look at budget

Teachers, parents, community members and school district officials spent nearly four hours looking closely at the budget, trying to find ways to cut and provide the best possible education for students.
“I don’t think anyone is here because they don’t care about the kids,” said Carbon County School District No. 2 Board Chairman Greg Bartlett in the March 26 meeting.

BLM to hold open house Monday

The Bureau of Land Management Rawlins Field Office (RFO) will put up its draft North Platte River Recreation Area Management Plan (RAMP) and Environmental Assessment (EA) for public comment April 8.
As part of the organization’s review period, the RFO will hold an open house for any public comment from 4 to 6 p.m. At the Saratoga Library, 503 W. Elm St., Saratoga.

Irene breaks school record

Before Justin Irene wrestled his final match of his high school career, Hanna wrestling coach Lyle Richardson told him “Win or lose, you made All State Wrestling”.
Irene said he was happy and surprised. He finished second in the heavyweight class at state.

Wrestling with expectations

Freshman Thatcher Spiering made the All State Wrestling team. His coach Jared Mason said it has been several years since a freshman made All State, the last to make it was Decker Hubbs.
“The sky is the limit,” Mason said of Spiering’s wrestling ability. “He loves to wrestle and would do it 365 days a year I think, if he could.”

Night of honors full of surprises

Waddie Love was one of 71 nominees who made it to the final rounds of the Wyoming Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
On March 16, Love, along with 13 other high school football players in Wyoming, received recognition for their high school careers.
“My heart is pumping fast,” Love said after the banquet. “I feel so honored to be here. Everyone has worked so hard to be here.”

Girls grapple too: Female wrestling coach delivers fresh perspective

When she first started wrestling, her presence on the mat was sometimes met with apprehension.
Some boys would forfeit before the match started when faced with wrestling her. Some schools would not even allow her to compete in matches.
“When it came to tournaments and the community, there were definite stigmas that would arise occasionally,” said Leah Stoner, assistant wrestling coach at HEM Junior/Senior High School.
