Two new planning commissioners, Jim Beckmann and Chris Duke, were appointed at the Dec. 15 town council meeting. Joel Francis Greff, 60, of Saratoga, Wyo. passed away at the St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Ore. on Dec. 12, 2015. Joel was born Dec. 4, 1955 in Garrison, N.D., son of Godfrey K. and Angela “Neileen” (Weinberger) Greff. Peter Larsen passed away in Rawlins, Wyo. on Dec. 22, 2014 at the age of 94. He was born in Rawlins on May 10, 1920 to Louis Christian “Chris” Larsen and Martha Hansen Larsen, whose parents immigrated to Wyoming from Denmark in the 1880’s. Peter grew up in Rawlins with his six brothers and sisters. His father’s family owned the H. Larsen Inc. lumberyard and hardware store. He graduated from Rawlins High School. David R. Starr passed away Dec. 13, 2015 following a brief battle with a brain disease. David was born Jan. 22, 1956 to Merle V. (Ward) and Ralph W. Starr in Rawlins, Wyo. He was a graduate of Platte Valley High School with the class of 1974. He was a master of many trades – meat cutter, carpet layer, carpenter, police officer for the town of Saratoga, security superintendent for Old Baldy Club, and most recently night sales manager at Kum and Go. Saratoga Mayor Ed Glode is planning to head up a committee to clean up the town, with the focus more on the final product of beautified properties and less on ticketing for non-compliance. The district Make It With Wool Contest was held Nov. 15 at the Jeffrey Center in Rawlins. Several Platte Valley residents placed in the competition. Contestants modeled outfits they made from at least 60 percent of wool fabric or yarn. Garments were also judged on construction. For the second year in a row, Ashlynn Johnson will be representing Wyoming in the National Make It With Wool competition. Johnson was named state winner last month in the Wyoming Make It With Wool competition held in Casper, Nov. 29-30. Johnson, a student at Encampment K-12 School, competes in the junior division. Ambulances, new and old, were the topic of discussion at the Dec. 9 regular meeting of the South Central Wyoming Emergency Medical Service (SCWEMS) Joint Powers Board (JPB). Ken Drain, chairman of the SCWEMS JPB, reported that two new ambulances are expected for delivery to the Saratoga ambulance garage during the week of Dec. 21. The Saratoga speech team took home first place at their first meet of the season at the Bobcat Invitation in Thermopolis Dec. 12. According to head coach Jacob Mickelsen, the Panther Talk Jocks had more points than even the top 3A teams. "We didn't just win the 2A category," Mickelsen said. The Saratoga Panthers boy’s basketball team (1-4, 1-0) braved the weather to get to the Shoshoni tournament last weekend only to lose two games. Their first scheduled game against Rocky Mountain on Friday afternoon was postponed due to the storm. Friday night the Panthers met the Shoshoni Wranglers (7-0) for the second time this season. After two games postponed due to weather the Saratoga girl’s basketball team faced the Cokeville Lady Panthers on Saturday and lost 33-44. With the winter break, no coaches were available for comment.
