Bill DiRienzo from the Wyoming Department of Quality (DEQ) office attended the Saratoga-Carbon County Impact Joint Powers Board (Water and Sewer Board) in November, to answer questions about the Environment Protection Agency’s (EPA) requirement to move the sewer lagoons discharge from flowing into Hot Slough Creek, to going to the North Platte River. The Saratoga Planning Commission had a productive evening at its Dec. 10 meeting. The majority of the two-hour meeting was spent approving a plan to amend Title 18 Zoning of the town code. The amendments would relax restrictions on home occupations. Influenza is starting to spread into Wyoming. The Wyoming Department of Health reported increased flu activity across the state in recent weeks. "While we are not seeing as many cases as this time last year," said Reggie McClinton, surveillance epidemiologist with the Wyoming Department of Health, "reported influenza activity is definitely picking up." The Riverside Town Council had a quick meeting Thursday meeting, which included talk of the 2014 Wyoming Association of Municipalities (WAM) Winter Workshop. Town Clerk and Treasurer Jan Cook notified the council of the WAM Winter Workshop scheduled to take place early next year. After nearly 32 years of service in the Platte Valley, Sue Bartlett is stepping down from her position as public health nurse supervisor for Carbon County Public Health. Barlett plans to officially retire from her position Jan. 2, 2014, but will be completely filled by Toni Rietveld, who began her first day Nov. 4. The town of Encampment had a short council meeting Thursday, covering winter street cleanup and the Emergency Water Supply Project. The Saratoga boys' basketball team was an unstoppable scoring machine Friday, slamming the local rival, Encampment Tigers, with a score of 80-60. Playing on their home turf Friday evening, the Panthers (5-0) maintained a wide lead for much of the game, scoring high with 24-11 at the end of the first quarter, and 64-40 at the end of the third. The Encampment Lady Tigers, who won only one game last year, proved they could be heading for a major turnaround season after a 56-28 win over Saratoga. Two Saratoga wrestlers achieved first-place rankings at the Soroco Invitational Saturday. 2 years ago Dec. 19, 1912 Basketball at Encampment Friday night the S. & E. ran a special train from here to Encampment for the benefit of the basketball game that night. About 70 people went from here and all report a good time. The Rubes and Giants played a one-sided game of 5 to 25 in favor of the Giants. The girls played against the Encampment girls and the results were 10 to 4 in favor of the Saratoga girls. The games were followed by a dance which lasted until train time Saturday morning. At Deseret Health and Rehab, residents enjoyed many activities throughout the week. The Activity Department offers a wide variety of activities each week to meet the residents’ interests, as well as the physical, mental and psychological well-being of each resident. Carbon County School District No. 2 held their final meeting of 2013 on Monday. Board members devoted a large part of their discussed financials of the 2013 calendar year. The district announced they have spent an average of $40,385 a day on district expenditures and have been able to keep these expenditures in check with their revenues without having to draw from reserve funds.
