Two U.S. Government agencies released decisions in the last two weeks that may bring a proposed Carbon County wind farm closer to becoming a reality. Tuesday, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued a record of decision approving a power transmission line project that will allow energy produced in Wyoming to be sold in power-hungry Southwestern States. The BLM’s decision came on the heels of last week’s announcement that the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife had issued a final Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for Power Company of...
About 15 different contractors representing eight different firms gathered at the Saratoga Town Hall Dec. 8 for an informational session on a project to clear Platte River gravel bars near the HWY 130 bridge. The project has long been on the town docket, but previously undisclosed details about its execution were released at the pre-bid meeting. Few ventured into howling winter wind to attend the Dec. 6 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council. About five members of the public (including incoming council member Jennie Lou Ivory) turned out for the conclave, which wrapped up in less than 25 minutes, after the council had attended to a slate of routine business. On top of the to-do list for the council is determining who to vote for in elections to the Local Government Liability Pool (LGLP). The LGLP is “a self-insurance liability pool for W...
The Encampment Town council met Thursday in what one member called “record time,” where it quickly disposed of routine matters before making ordinance changes and extending Christmas bonuses. During the 12-minute meeting, the council held a public hearing to discuss a proposed change to town ordinance to make it illegal for anyone to occupy a dwelling with no water or sewer service, and voted to extend Christmas bonuses to town employees and committee members. The board also bid farewell to council member Gary Stull who did not run for re-...
Riverside Town Council sped through its agenda Thursday in about 30 minutes, dispensing of most routine business quickly. Several issues took up more time than usual council business, however; an apparent reduction in tourism spending, a leash law and a new firearms ordinance. While discussing the Carbon County Visitor’s Council report, council member Fred Lorenz said he had spoken to the visitor’s council and learned that between October 2015 and September 2016, lodging tax collection was down 70 percent over the same period in prior years. Ri...
It’s just about time again for a mental cleaning. I keep putting new things in my head and other things keep falling out. That being the case I thought I would share some of the things taking up space in my cranial cavity so maybe I can retain some other important things. … or not. Since it has been well over a year since I wrote a column composed of half-baked ideas, I figured it was about time. *** Dumplings: Is that what you get when you have bunny-sized poops? Or is that just folks from the...

The eight SHS wresters participated in two competitions over the weekend, with junior Jaxon King and Ingraham representing the team at the varsity level. “I couldn’t have been happier with th...
The Saratoga Panthers boys basketball team went 1-2 in their hardwood debut over the weekend, notching a win against Moorcroft while falling short in games against Lingle-Fort Laramie and Shoshoni. Head coach Jason Williams saw a lot to like from his team’s inaugural effort however, and thinks his boys can go far as the team starts to cohere in the weeks to come. “We played hard, we played good defense–there’s just a couple little things to tweak,” Williams said of the Panthers first weekend....
While Heather Bartlett’s Saratoga Middle School boys basketball team was getting anointed conference champions, her other team, the Saratoga High School girls basketball team was getting off to a bit of a rocky start. Over the weekend in Burns, the Lady Panthers dropped all three games in their first tournament of the year, but Bartlett isn’t worried. “It was kind of a good weekend just to see where the team was at,” Bartlett said. She described the tournament as more of an opportunity for exp...
