    Staff Report|Nov 28, 2012

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a fatal neurological disease of deer, elk, and moose has been discovered in elk hunt area 10 that encompasses a portion of the Snowy Range area in the Medicine Bow National forest and surrounding private lands. This is the first time CWD has been found in elk in the area, however it is not surprising since the hunt area for deer (hunt area 75) in the same general area, first had a positive test in 2002. • Arm wrestling with grandma

    Joe Elder|Nov 28, 2012

I was 16 years old before I could beat my grandmother in an arm wrestling match. We were at her kitchen counter, seated on opposite stools. It wasn’t a quick match, and afterwards I was confused. I expected to have to go gentle on her knuckles when I pinned her arm down. Instead, after two minutes of struggle, I just got them to touch the counter and claimed victory. It was a hollow victory. It was my grandmother, after all. In my defense, my grandmother hefted a lot of cast iron pans and k...

    Saratoga Sun Editorial|Nov 28, 2012

Circling an asphalt wasteland like a vulture waiting for that fleeting moment when a parking space opens, fighting the bargain-hunting hordes blocking the aisles and stepping into lines that feel like they have not moved since the last Black Friday may be fun for some people. Here in Saratoga, we feel lucky for the opportunity to walk into a distinctive store, go straight to the owner and ask about the new items in stock. Inside this year’s Christmas Candle special pullout, you will find local business owners donating their time and money to p...

    Joe Elder|Nov 28, 2012

In April, the town council approved a water rate increase of three percent per year for five years, but Town Clerk Suzie Cox said the town has not been able to build up reserves and invest because of the no-reads occurring with the new water meters. The extra revenue was supposed to be invested in the town’s Enterprise fund to provide money for repairs and improvement projects and make up for shortfalls the past few years. According to an article in the Feb. 1, 2012, edition of the Sun, Town E...
