  • Medical debate continues

    Joshua Wood|Nov 27, 2019

In recent months, both the Platte Valley Healthcare Project (PVHP) and Memorial Hospital of Carbon County (MHCC) continue to pursue their plans of expanding healthcare in the Valley. Many of those discussions have taken place in the council chambers of the Town of Saratoga. While the PVHP has continued its pursuit of a critical access hospital, MHCC announced their intentions over the summer of establishing a clinic in Saratoga. During the Nov. 19 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council, both...

  • The Coach truly makes a difference

    Mike Armstrong|Nov 27, 2019

One of the strongest benefits I continue to get from my job as a Saratoga Sun reporter is covering sports teams in Carbon County School District No 2 (CCSD2). Living in Hanna, I am the guy who covers all the teams at Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School, and there is a definite attachment to the kids there as I watch them from the sidelines. The same is true for a few of the Saratoga teams I cover, such as football and wrestling. Going to Laramie this past week and watching HEM...

  • North County Contingencies

    Mike Armstrong|Nov 27, 2019

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School can find this time of year tough to get to school due to the weather. Wind and snow can make it treacherous for busses to pick up students and get them back safely. Many staff members also live in one community and work in another. The north end of the county has a contingency to keep the students and staff off the roads in the event of severe weather or other emergencies. If there is a change in the regular schedule, it will be announced...

  • Hard work recognized

    Joshua Wood|Nov 27, 2019

While the Encampment Lady Tigers were able to make it to the 1A West Conference Volleyball Tournament this year, they eventually fell in the consolation semi-finals. The silver lining to their journey was that they had made it further than they had the previous year, having fought their way into the regional tournament through a pigtail game against the Farson-Eden Lady Pronghorns. With the season at an end, the Lady Tigers have yet another silver lining that they can enjoy as two Encampment...

  • PVLL moves forward

    Joshua Wood|Nov 27, 2019

While discussion became heated during the Nov. 19 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council over little league baseball and available fields, it appears that both the governing body and Platte Valley Little League (PVLL) may have a path forward. The discussion of providing a place for PVLL first appeared before the council in March 2019, when the Town of Saratoga sent a letter to the Wood family (no relation) asking to use Wood’s Field for one year. While use of the field was allowed, it was the g...

  • Protecting source water

    Dana Davis|Nov 27, 2019

Wyoming Rural Water Association held a recent workshop on source water protection. The workshop held on Wednesday, November 20, was led by Michelle Christopher of Wyoming Rural Water. She started off by reminding everyone that water is life and protecting our waters benefits us. The goal of the workshop was to discuss the importance of not only protecting water but also to brainstorm ideas on how to educate people. A steering committee will be created to facilitate an effective source water...

  • Three in a row

    Joshua Wood|Nov 27, 2019

The beginning of every hunting season sees countless people head out into the wilderness with the hopes of filling their tags. Whether it is antelope, deer or elk season, a good harvest means meat in the freezer and food for the family. While many will end their season being able to punch at least one tag, it's rare for someone to fill all three. Even rarer is someone being able to do so in their first year. Jerahleigh Johnson, a 12-year-old first time hunter, was able to do just that as she...

    Mike Armstrong|Nov 27, 2019

Marcy Cooley was surprised when she was named Wyoming Realtor of the Year in 2018 (see Cooley named Wyo. Realtor of the year on page 1, Sept. 26, 2018 Saratoga Sun). That year she thanked many people who had helped her gain the honor. Cooley has been working in real estate since 1994. She got her start with Saulcy Real Estate and later moved to Town and Country. She has been with Town and Country for the majority of her real estate career and is happy. Cooley said the office and staff are like m...

  • Tom and Jerry for Christmas

    Mike Armstrong|Nov 27, 2019

The cold weather is bearing down on us and so are the holidays. This is the time of year when people break out their recipes of hot toddies or egg nog to get in the spirit of Christmas and keep warm. There is an old time 19th century hot drink that was famous in its day, but has sadly fallen off most drink menus and many modern recipe books; The Tom and Jerry. No, the drink was not named after the famous cartoon duo, because the bartender who created this drink first published it in 1862. Jerry...

  • Holiday food tips

    Staff Report|Nov 27, 2019

The Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) is sharing five tips to help prevent foodborne illness from ruining holiday meals that feature turkey as a star attraction. Tiffany Greenlee, an epidemiologist with WDH, said mistakes with holiday dinners can sometimes lead to unfortunate illnesses. “Foodborne illness is something that can be avoided with good practices and habits,” she said. “These steps can be especially important when we have large holiday gatherings that are spread over more time than our everyday meals.” Greenlee suggests the followi...

  • Fabulously fast fudge

    Dana Davis|Nov 27, 2019

My recipes so far have been about tweaking foods to help make them a little more healthy, but not this week! It is getting close to the holidays and we all like to cheat a little and have a tasty treat. So, a warning to everyone, this is a full sugar, full fat and all of that recipe. I use to think fudge was difficult. I previously only had recipes that involved a candy thermometer. I would either end up with goop or a lump of chocolaty looking substance that was too hard to chew. I remember...

  • Reflections from our Files

    Staff Report|Nov 27, 2019

1 years ago November 27, 1919 Good Times Coming It has been many years since the streets of Saratoga have been so cluttered up with piles of brick, cement, lumber and other building materials as during the last few weeks, and the indications are indeed good for an era of unusual prosperity in this section of the county. If we may judge by the amount of building now in progress and contemplated, and the number of transfers of farm and city property during the past few months. Practically every residence in town which could be bought has...
