The room was brimming with cowboy hats. Cowboys and ranchers from across the state filled the room at the Fort Reno building at the Wyoming State Fairgrounds in Douglas Sunday afternoon. They were there to recognize the first 32 inductees into the Wyoming Cowboy Hall of Fame. One woman and 31 men were recognized for their dedication to the ranching way of life. Four of those men were from Carbon County. Sen. Mike Enzi presented the plaques and medals as Rhonda Sedgwick Stearns announced the...
Possible contamination caused the town of Saratoga to close the Hot Pool last Thursday. Town officials say the hot pool was closed after an individual, who had been admitted to the hospital for the Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcis aureus (MRSA) infection, had reportedly visited the hot pool. The individual had reportedly been to the hot pool on more than one occasion, but town officials could not confirm when the visits to the hot pool were made. "Crews are working hard at the Hot Pool...
Discussion of the noise ordinance resulted in heated discussion at the Saratoga Town Council meeting on Oct. 21. Ordinance 9.20.050 reads “no person shall between the hours of ten [10] p.m. and seven [7] a.m. maliciously or wilfully disturb the peace and quiet of any neighborhood or family within the town limits by loud or unusual noises or by tumultuous or offensive carriage, threatening, quarreling, challenging to fight or fighting.” Todd Hughes, who was issued a citation for breaking the ord...
The bank stabilization project will not move forward, Saratoga Mayor John Zeiger said. The project, which was intended to clean the cement rip-rap on the river bank behind the town of Saratoga shop and pay for the river bank protection adjacent to the Veterans Island Bridge, was suspended due to increased costs of the project. The money provided to the town for that project has been returned to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Zeiger said the initial costs of the stabilization...
The U.S. Forest Service will waive fees at most of its day-use recreation sites from Nov. 8 - 11, in honor of Veterans Day. The fee waiver is the last of four offered this year. The program is in cooperation with other federal land management agencies under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. Fees will be waived generally for day-use areas, such as picnic grounds, developed trailheads and destination visitor centers. Sites operated by private concessionaires may be included in the waiver if the permit holder wishes to participate....
I’m Keith McLendon, and I approved this message. Of course I did. I wrote the damned thing. After a given candidate has run on for his 30 seconds about how evil he thinks his opponent is, they then have to let you know (in no uncertain terms), that they agree wholeheartedly with the words that were just coming out of their mouths. I know PACs (Political Action Committees) pay for a lot of advertising. These messages do not come directly from the candidate’s campaign, so the PACs would like you t...
Editor, I would like to thank the Saratoga Sun for covering the First Annual Saratoga Community Garden Fall luncheon. We all had fun making dishes from our produce, hosting the town employees and others that have helped us, and giving away some of the bounty we had gathered. From my perspective, it came from a great mix of Valley people who have long contributed to improving our town, and new townspeople who brought lots of good ideas and energy. The Community Garden, which will continue to grow into an even greater asset to our town, was made...
We are the Cowboy State for many reasons. This past weekend, four of Carbon County’s cowboys were recognized for their contribution to the state of Wyoming as ranchers. Wyoming is so cowboy, we have a Cowboy Code of Ethics. Wyoming was the first state to adopt a Code of Ethics in March 2010. • Live each day with courage • Take pride in your work • Always finish what you start • Do what has to be done • Be tough, but fair • When you make a promise, keep it • Ride for the brand • Talk less and say more • Remember that some things aren’t for s...

On a perfect fall-color drive a little over one month ago, John Farr told the story of making Battle Pass a scenic byway. The story of the pass itself includes paleoindians hunting mammoths, settlers and travelers traversing the landscape, tie hacks and miners eking out a living, boom towns that busted, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp and the ecology and economic contribution of the forest. Battle Pass is a 57-mile stretch of Wyoming Highway 70 between Encampment and Savery that is mostly in...
