  • Payroll approved, training scheduled

    Joshua Wood|Oct 23, 2019

Following the curtailed Saratoga Town Council meeting on Oct. 1, the regular meeting of the governing body on Oct. 15 saw the return of a complete agenda. That, however, did not stop continued discussion over the town finances and their presentation to the town council from taking place. During the two meetings of the town council in September, the Sept. 3 meeting saw Councilmember Jon Nelson vote against approval (see “Financial inquiries” on page 1 of the Sept. 11 Saratoga Sun) and the Sep...

The Saratoga/Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce has begun selling tickets for the annual Reverse Drawing. Tickets are $10 each and only 300 are sold. Unlike the usual raffle procedure, the very last ticket drawn is the grand prize winner in this drawing. “The winner receives $1,000 in chamber gift certificates which can be redeemed at chamber member businesses only,” said director, Stacy Crimmins. “You could go out to dinner, buy toys for the kids, and have your car serviced,” she added. The first, 50th, 100th, 150th, 200th and 250th tickets dra...

    Joshua Wood|Oct 23, 2019

Discussion of the clinic lease between the Town of Saratoga and Health Management Services (HMS) returned to the council chambers during the Oct. 15 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council. For the first time since the lease came up for discussion in May of this year, it would appear that HMS and the governing body may be moving forward to find a solution. Following a healthcare update from Saratoga Care Center Administrator Mark Pesognelli, Councilmember Jon Nelson brought up the healthcare...

  • There's still a place for local news

    Joshua Wood|Oct 23, 2019

“I didn’t get my newspaper this week. Did my subscription run out?” Pick any random week following the publication of the Saratoga Sun and there may be someone walking into the office asking this question. It may also be a phone call or an email. A part of me doesn’t like getting this question because it means that there was a breakdown somewhere in getting the paper to those who want it. Another part of me, however, loves getting this question. In a world of never-ending breaking news, digital...

  • Some Halloween tips

    Saratoga Sun Editorial|Oct 23, 2019

While the snow we keep on receiving makes it appear that winter cut the line ahead of fall, we are still very much in the autumn season. Next week, Valley residents should prepare themselves for quite a fright. Ghosts, goblins and ghouls will be out on the streets. Witches and warlocks will be out in broad daylight! Halloween has the potential to be a fun and exciting time of the year, but it can go bad in a hurry. We at the Saratoga Sun would like to take a few moments to give our costumed kiddos, those passing through town, and those passing...

  • Tigers get a windy win

    Joshua Wood|Oct 23, 2019

The strong Saturday winds that brought in the snowstorm on Sunday appeared to work in favor of the Encampment Tigers as they hosted their second game, against the Natrona County High School (NCHS) sophomores. "For the second straight week the team came out, started fast and defended their home field," said Kegan Willford, head coach of the Encampment Tigers. Throughout the game, the Tigers would score double digits while keeping NCHS to single digits. In the first quarter, a 10 yard pass from...

The Encampment Lady Tiger’s work on confidence and game play paid off for them over the weekend as they secured their first conference win of the season. This will force a pigtail game to determine regional placing. The Lady Tigers were hosted by the Cokeville Lady Panthers (24-5, 7-0) on Friday evening and the Farson-Eden Lady Pronghorns (4-11-2, 1-6) on Saturday afternoon. On Friday evening, the Lady Panthers were hosted by the Farson-Eden Lady Pronghorns (4-11-2, 1-6) where they secured a win in three sets. The following day, Saratoga was hosted by the Cokeville Lady Panthers (24-5, 7-0) where they ultimately lost to the hosting Lady Panthers. “We had a hard time getting our block set against Cokeville, which we typically rely on,” said Shayley Love, head coach of...

  • Miners stay undefeated

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 23, 2019

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School football team continued their winning ways against Kaycee as they beat the Buckaroos 87-50. Shane McGraw passed for 117 yards connecting for three touchdowns. Brendon Reeves passed for 55 yards and one touchdown. The passing game was solid, but it was the ball on the ground that churned in the most points. Head Football Coach Zach Scott was elated with the overall team play, but he had a couple starters besides Shane really take apart the...

  • Lady Miners Beat Longhorns and Eagles

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 23, 2019

“Saturday we were able to get two more conference wins,” Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School Head Volleyball Coach Jackie Jones said. “With Glendo we were able to get our younger girls some significant playing time.” Jones said Rock River gave the Lady Miners a bit more trouble. The Lady Longhorns won the first game. “In the beginning, you could tell we hadn’t played volleyball in the last couple weeks,” Jones started. “We came out a little rusty and lost the first set. Afte...

The Saratoga High School football team took apart the Normative Services Academy (NSI) on Saturday in Sheridan with a score of 82-53. “We played very well and were able to sub early and often,” Saratoga Head Football Coach Logan Wright said. “Our leaders stepped up and have created an environment where everyone can thrive.” Wright did acknowledge although the win was resounding, there was still room for improvement. “We did give up three kick returns for touchdowns,” Wright said. “Special te...

Cindy Wallace has been the Carbon County Economic Corporation Director for over a decade. Although she is sad to be leaving Carbon County, she is moving to Kanas to be closer to her family. “I was raised near the town of Larned in south central Kansas on a farm,” Wallace said. “I was in 4-H and showed horses and raised beef like any good farm girl.” Wallace finished high school and went to Ft. Hayes State University at first, but switched to Kansas State University where she graduated with a B.S...

  • Kids learn to create projects

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 23, 2019

On Friday morning, the students at Hanna Elementary School (HES) started their day creating different projects in a manner that had them learn to estimate cost and the value of cooperation. "Here is a marble run and over there is a tower," Sara Jones, fourth grade teacher and coordinator for this educational program said. "This time instead of giving them a bucket of supplies, like we normally do, they get their project they have to make, then they have to plan out their project first using a...
